For people who convert to DivX, this sounds like a pretty good deal. They're giving away the new DivX create bundle for free for a limited time. The post I read elsewhere said today only.

thanks pat, will download it and test it.

i wonder what the real intention behind that divx giveaway is. probably they give it for free because xvid is far more popular than divx. last time it tested both programs, xvid was a lot faster and had the better quality especially when there was text on the screen. the text in divx looked a little bit washed out.

I've always struggled with Xvid encodes and have always preferred DivX - maybe it's the playback hardware I use (Archos AV440, Yamada DVR-8400X, and occasionally my PC). I always find that for like-for-like bitrates or final sizes, Xvid produces a sharper, more colour vibrant picture - but is very much prone to macroblocks - wherease DivX seems almost as good on the picture (not quite as sharp or colour vibrant, but has improved with DivX6 compared to DivX5), but I never find any issues with macroblocks.

I'm XViD inclined myself, and for this kind of automatic crunching IMHO AutoGK+XViD can't be beat. If you're going to do it manually, then VirtualDubMod and 2-pass XViD is your man.

However, the new DiVX Drag'n'Drop johnny certainly does a very decent fast and easy job for non-critical crunching. And it has one key advantage over AutoGK -- you can drop AviSynth scripts on it. So AviSynth (DirectShowFilter()) plus DiVX Create is a natural for transcoding nasty stuff like rmvb.

I use AutoGK - and that's where I've found problems - maybe it's down to the foibles of the playback hardware I use - I'm not sure, but using AutoGK, and the same output file sizes (so 2-pass encoding) I have issues with Xvid and macroblocks that I don't with DivX - like-for-like.

For AutoGK, there are some additional tweaker apps that let you mess around with the Avisynth scripts - but if you really want to do more tweaking you can just use GK.

After that, you may as well just do it by hand, by indexing, scripting, frameserving and encoding.

Does it include a license for the MPEG-2 plugin? That is usually $9.99 extra

I don't know. I haven't received the serial number yet.

The other forum mentioned it was a one day only deal but the offer is still posted at the link.

For free, download and find out!

Well it's always been available as a free download - it's just the serial number that's the freebie.

I got a serial number emailed pretty much immediately, but I know of others who haven't had one emailed, some hours later <shrug>

If you haven't received a serial number and you use Yahoo mail, check the bulk folder.

Only a 15 day trial.

Figured they were just trolling for email addresses to spam later. :(
The deal has come and gone
I got mine.

The best part, was the discussion in this thread.
Quite an education.

I've mostly experienced DivX (XviD?) after a reconversion back to some attempt at DVD format.
Few American DVD players will play DivX/XviD, so real DVD format is the choice, when taking TV shows off the net for "convenient" play.

The tool I used was set to "low" or maybe "lowest" quality, which kept the DVD output file small.
Setting it to "medium" or higher quality didn't result in a better picture (garbage in, garbage out), just a bigger file.

I've also played the original DivX files on a DVD player which handled 'em, and my home-made DVD didn't look any worse.
(Used the same TV, and made an A:B comparison)

Maybe I'll experiment with the solutions described here, for a better education.
Thanks.
