DVD Maestro still sees the elemental video stream of a file as having a problem and reports:
Temporal references in GOP # are out out of sequence.

PVAstrumento v 2.1.0.9 reports error: Temporal structure wrong in GOP at <timecode>. The timecodes with the error are usually at the very beginning, and at each edit point -- even if the editing is done at the I-frames. This version of PVAstrumento deals with the problem by dropping the GOP and creates an audio sync problem. The result does however import correctly into DVD Maestro. If you refuse to drop the GOP, the temporal structure errors remain and DVD Maestro will not import the file.

Tmpgenc's DVD Author has no problem with the edited files and doesn't require a demux so is what I've been using lately but it'd be nice to also have Maestro as an option. Any idea what the temporal structure problems are? The original MPEG2 source is a DVB file in PVA format.

Forgot to mention this is with version 1.6.0.248 of Videoredo.

The temporal references are the order in which frames are to be displayed. First question, is the Movie Factory checkbox (Tools>Options>General parameters) unchecked? When checked, VideoReDo makes some alterations to the temporal references to compensate for a problem in Movie Factory.

Here's what I suggest. Create a small 20 MB file. Edit it with VideoReDo and see if PVAStrumento and/or DVD Maestro reports a temporal reference problem. Hopefully it will. Then you can upload the file and the project to our FTP site.

BTW, turn on the debug option in Tools>Options>Advanced Stream. This will show us all the temporal references at the cut points.

Thanks a lot! The Move Factory checkbox was checked (it was the default). Unchecking it eliminated the errors. Movies already edited didn't get fixed at the edit point by simply unchecking the box and resaving but the error at the start of the file did. New edits however didn't seem to have a problem if done with the correct setting. I was able to go from a PVA file to an edited MPEG saved to elemental streams without having to run it through PVAStrumento and DVD maestro imported it without error and without a sync problem.

I'd suggest not making the Movie Factory setting the default. It'd be obvious to people using Movie Factory that this was necessary but it was not obvious that this setting would cause problems in other packages since it was the default.

We are currently in the process of reviewing all "out of the box" options and dialogs. Will certainly consider this one as well. Turns out that most authoring programs don't object to the temporal changes we put in for MF which is why we leave it on as a default. Might also put in a feature to reset the temporal references if it turns out MF2 is not checked.

Reading through this post made me think about checking this to see if this was causing my problem with Dr DivX.

Yes, it was! By unchecking the option to create MF streams, and re-saving my test project, I was able to get Dr DivX to accept the file and encode it fully. I'm about to do a test on a full-length movie but it's looking good.

This is probably one setting that should be "off" by default because I didn't even think about it until reading this.

That settles it, its now OFF by default, just made the change.

Glad that resolved the Divx issue. When you've finished encoding let me know how it goes, want to be sure everything is in sync. I can't help but mention that Dr. Divx should have accepted the files with MF compatability option on. The changes that option implies are very minor and still produce compliant files although everyone's definition of complaint might be not be the same. :)

Beta build #249 has been posted. The Tools>QuickStream fix option should fix any temporal reference issues created by earlier edits with the MovieFactory option ON.
