Dan, edited two DigiTV mpegs (BBC) with beta 450 by top & tailing then saved as mpegs. Both edited files became bigger than the original by about 300meg eg orig. 1.685GB after editing 1.955GB. Although play back is okay on VRD, using WMP, Media Player Classic or Nero Showtime the sound was obliterated by noise like rushing water. It appears mainly when you jump along the timeline. Then tried with version 417a, same file now edits to 1.481GB and sound is okay.

I think I've figured out what the problem is. Normally I save the edited mpegs as elementary files and convert the audio (mpa) file to wav to edit out the talk over. But sometimes I save direct as mpeg then convert to mpeg4 (Xvid) which is what I did this time.
I noticed on the beta's there is now an option to save the audio as a wav when saving as elementary, so I set the option to save a step. I assumed that when saving to mpeg it would ignore this as an mpeg cannot contain uncompressed audio, but it didn't. So the mpeg has compressed video (mpv) and uncompressed audio (wav) instead of mpa, which is why none of the mpeg players work correctly. Is it possible to disable this feature when saving as mpeg?
Incidentally, AVIcodec identifies the audio as mpeg-1 audio layer-2, but VRD/Tools/Stream Select correctly identifies it as LPCM.

Sorry, I meant doesn't normally. But it does cause a problem in this case with common software mpeg players. I've gone back to testing b450 and changing the audio back to mpeg fixes the sound problem.
