Full screen displays

Having, finally, got round the aspect ratio and full screen (on my 4:3 TV) problems with my DigiTV recordings. I wondered if someone can answer this question for me? If I buy a retail widescreen DVD and make a copy of it, but, tweak the .ifo so that it displays full screen on my TV, would the picture displayed be the same as a retail full screen DVD?
