View Full Version : 475 - large number of underflows in 19 GB file

I had a search in this forum and found some stuff on this for earlier version of VRD, but nothing recently.
I don't usually capture such large files, maybe up to 12 GB on occasion. Not sure if that had anything to do with it. Captures usually process fine, with only an occasional 'error' noted in the VRD processing.
After noticing VRD taking forever to open a capture from last night, I ran QSF on it. It found 103,455 PTS underflow errors in the 9 hours of recording, with the 19.5 GB file. Capture is in TS-mux with WebScheduler.
The VRD log file is below. The log just ahead of this showed VRD finding lots of PTS errors as it was trying to open the file 'normally'. The QSF run is in this log, as well as VRD opening the file after the QSF.
The fixed file appears to play back OK. Should I be concerned there are errors in there?
My settings for capturing and for VRD have not changed in quite a while. As mentioned, this is the first time I have seen so many PTS underflows.
Any ideas?

Load the output file into VideoReDo and press Ctrl+L to list the properties of the file.
It could be the bitrate of the file exceeded the header bitrate and you need to increase it in the file save dialog box by pressing the Options button.

Thanks Pat.
Interesting. The data rate from the QSFxed file is indeed high. I have posted a similar recording or two, and they are both lower. I suppose this means they upped the bitrate for the transmission.
EDIT: And the one from last night was back to the normal 6 Mbps.
I went into VRD and changed the default bit rate in the Save As options from 10 to 15 Mbps. Made sure it remembered it. Then tried opening the original capture file again. It still took forever to load, so I terminated it. Would you have expected it to open OK if the default bitrate was increased in the Save As options?

There were a couple of questions perhaps a bit lost in all the detail.
Having run the QSF on the file, and having made the 100,000+ corrections, is that file OK in terms of quality? What was done to it with VRD fixing it?
Also, if the error was because the bitrate exceeded the header bitrate, why didn't the problem go away when I upped the header bitrate in the Save As options?
Thanks.

I'm having a similar problem with my ~9GB files (.TP (transport stream) format, recorded on MyHD). I have tried several input files with the same result (none work). It doesn't matter if I make any edits to the file before saving (the logs below are for no edits). (Though I just tried the older version 2.1.2.417, and it has the same problem.)
When I save as .MPG, the output is extremely jerky (unwatchable). Saving as VOB is less jerky, but not good enough.
Trying to save as .TS almost immediately gives the following error:
"Mpeg stream error: Transport Muxer Buffer Underflow, details in VideoReDo.log."
The Ctrl-L properties of the input file are:

Have you tried setting the "Output Mux Rate" to "Automatic" and increasing the number of samples to 16 - 20 or more?
Also with a MyHD, you generally need to save as .ts, not .mpg for gracefull playback.
These two things have worked for me (just edited "Toy Story" that had all the SD filler from ABC)

I have a couple of files that have similar problems but worse in some ways...
I see "Mpeg stream error: Transport Muxer Buffer Underflow, details in VideoReDo.log." and "<><><> TS Mux Error: BufferOverflow in Percolate <><><>" at the same point in the same files depending on the setting I chose.
I set samples from 4 up 100, no improvement. I tried changing the rate from 12Mbps to 35Mbps, without any luck. The higher rates caused overflow and lower rates caused underflow. Somewhere between 19Mbps and 20Mbps the error would transfer from underflow to an overflow. Never found a rate that worked.
In this case I was joining two files via VRD. When I manually merged them and ran it through QSF it finally worked without issue. QSFing each file and using VRD to merge always failed.
Also, I still have the problem that merging TS files manually still produces different results than using VRD to merge the files. VRD will state the same input file size for both the manual merge and VRD merge, but QSFing will result in different outputs. The file are definitely TS and split at 100MB boundaries, which means the TS stream is cut at the byte level. Playing the files at the boundaries in VRD never has any issue. But letting VRD merge causes the output file size to grow about 1%-5% versus manually merging the files.
Here are several logs of merged files that has both has overflow and underflow at same point in the file.

Yes, that made a huge difference, setting Automatic in the Transport Stream pref category and saving as TS. The video is still not perfect, but no jerkiness anymore. I'll play around with it and post my results later (and try with an older version for comparison).
Thanks!

Pat, there were a number of unanswered questions raised in this post that have perhaps again been buried in long logs.
Could you please comment on them? Thanks.
Thanks.

It may not play back correctly if the bitrate in sections of the file exceed the header bitrate.
How many errors did you get the second time around with upping the header bitrate. Remember, this is the average bitrate displayed in the output complete not the maximum found in the files.
