pat, dan told me to post this for you:
im capturing via a external usb dazzle digital video creator 100 (DVC 100) onto a gateway pent3 850mhz 40gb hd laptop, capturing programming using sage tv 1.4 from outputs on the tv.
im looking to take the tv shows which eat up gigs and gigs of space off the hd, burning them onto cd-r's (don't have a dvd burner on this system and network isnt set up yet).
prob is the cd's only hold 700megs so trying to use videoredo to split the mpegs so can burn onto cd-r using either easy cd 7.0 or NTI CD maker platinum. just burning them as data files -- straight mpegs. videoredo opens the mpeg fine but only plays the video, no sound at all.
dan's handling but asked me to post it: he believes its capturing LPCM audio and we dont know how to fix this. he sent me the update to ver204 which may support it. any thoughts on how to solve this the best way? thanks in advance and kudos to your amazing support there.
As far as I can see, the Dazzle DVC100 is using the same LSI Logic MPEG encoder chip as the DVC150, the Fusion and the DCS200 (which I have.)
Its a funny bird with some compatibility problems. It doesn't like to play nice with the rest of your system. I had to remove it at one point and reinstall some software in order to be able to use the Ulead software with their own MPEG codec.
Are you recording using Moviestar 5 or the test utility? What format are you recording in? The standard in Moviestar 5 is just 3 options VCD, SVCD, and DVD which just defines the video resolution. The audio is always LPCM 48KHz.
The test utility (DVXCELtest) gives you much more flexibility in terms of recording paramters and I recommend that instead. You can set resolution and compression, etc. Also there are some great user written programs that allow you to modify the maximum capture size in one file. It works great! Depending on the OS, you can increase the size to amything you want. There's also another utility that if you still have the "MZL" files, it can join the MPEGs together.
Right now, all you're going to do is offload them as data CDs with straight MPEG recorded. Are you eventually planning to get a DVD recorder? If so then you probably want to capture in a DVD resolution to burn to a DVD at some point in the future. If you're just planning on making SVCDs or VCD out of them in the long term, record in one of those modes. After cutting with VRD You would have to downgrade the audio to 44.1KHz to be compatible. This will take a while.
In terms of the audio not playing, this is fairly "normal" for the Dazzle. When you were capturing, could you hear the audio through the computer? Also, some applications will play the audio and some won't. It seems to be a function of whether or not they recognize the Dazzle LPCM audio codec.
I'm going to be trying the updated rev over the weekend and see how it works. Also I'll check and see which application it played in and which it didn't and let you know. For example, I sent Dan some test files to work on enabling LPCM support for VRD. While capturing, I couldn't hear the audio in spite of enabling audio monitor during capture. Loading it into another application after capture and playing it, the audio was fine. I believe I still have the notes on what I did to fix it last time. I'll let you know.
Jay,
I have a suggestion in terms of splitting the files to fit on CD. This is the quick and dirty method but will work, unfortunately only on future recordings.
You have an option for capture file size in both the Moviestar5 and DVXCEL capture programs. In MS5 there is a preset for 700MB. In DVXCEL, you can specify any size you want so just enter 700 MB.
