I thought I'd post this in hopes of saving someone the six month learning process that I've gone thru. It's been very frustrating until I found VideoRedo.

I now capture video files using Cyberlink's PowerVCR. I capture to their DVD NTSC profile. It breaks the video stream into multiple blocks of about 1.6 gigabytes and is able to keep up with capturing DVD 720x480 video at 4Mbps. Cyberlink's PowerDirector 3 cannot seem to keep up with capturing the 720x480 frame size so it creates jumpy video. Powerdirector sucks in a number of ways but has a few qualities if you suffer with it long enough. Once captured, I patch the pieces together using VideoRedo. When capturing from VHS it seems that there WILL BE frames dropped and prior to VideoRedo I had no way to get audio and video synchronized.
After capturing, I use DVD-Lab to create menus, chapters etc and then burn to DVD. It works out pretty good now but what a time consuming pain it was to get this far! From what I've seen, DVD-Lab is the ONLY way to create DVD menus. That 'MyDVD' package is a joke being played on the inexperienced. Getting support out of CyberLink is like talking to monkeys. They translate from English to Hindi to Chinese and back again with the answer always being "You can't get there from here".

Anyhow, good luck with your video captures. I'm expecting the arrival of a video stabilizer today so I can capture copy protected VHS.

I was capturing raw avi files from vhs in virtual dub. Vdub gives a readout of the frame drops as you record.

I searched the vcr's menus until I found a "video stabilizer" that was on by default for old tapes. Once I turned it off, no more dropped frames and no need to check audio syn.

Thus I was able to capture avi at full resolution at a rate of 28 Mbps to a raid 0 drive or a SATA drive.
