Hello,

Complete newby to Videoredo software and to burning DVD's on computer. I have several movies saved on DVD-r disks from a standalone dvd recorder. I have interested in editing out commercials and then reburning a final dvd.

Can Videoredo perform the editing process and author the final dvd?

How do I copy my video_TS folder to my HD?

Any preferred location to copy the video_TS folder?

I tried loading the DVD copy utility from the videoredo ftp site but was unable to access. Yikes, this is getting frustrating...

Someone else mentioned a problem connecting to the FTP.

You should try again now as it seems to be working.

VideoReDo will edit your files.

We are developing and authoring module. If you need to author now, you should review these links.

Hi Pat,

I am on the 14 day clock for evaluating videoredo and a 30 day clock for returning my DVD burner. I'm looking to burn my first DVD, ASAP.

I loaded contents of three DVD's to my computer by three methods: a) copying TS_video directory to HD, b) copying with dvd encrypter, and c) using the command line. All three methods worked satisfactorily for moving contents on the disk to the HD. I then started Videoredo, loaded the VOB files, and attempted to combine. Videoredo did not make it all the way through the files before stopping. No error message given, just stop.

With nothing to lose, I used the QSF function, thinking that might correct the problem. QSF successfully completed its task on most attempts but the whole movie was not available for edits.

Not sure what is going on here. All three videos play flawlessly on two different DVD players and on my DVD burner. In my opinion, the DVD source is not the problem.

'm going to the office to download your utility. Hopefully, this will provide success.

I sincerely appreciate your time and assistance!

Rick

Hi Pat,

Yes, I installed the trial key yesterday.

I have loaded your utility and tried to use it on one DVD (Big Red One, nice WWII flick). The DVD was loaded into the DVD drive. Windows explorer lists 10 files in the Video_TS directory:

Video_TS IFO 12 kb
Video_TS Mpeg 86 kb
Video_TS.bup BUP 12 kb
Vts_0 IFO 84 kb
vts_0.bup BUP 84 kb
vts_01_1 Mpeg 1,048,534 kb
vts_01_2 Mpeg 1,048,534 kb
vts_01_3 Mpeg 1,048,534 kb
vts_01_4 Mpeg 1,048,534 kb
vts_01_5 Mpeg 287,330 kb

Your utility only listed one file in the Video_TS directory on the DVD drive. If I select this file (vts_01_1.mpeg), the utility lists 5 VOB files and gives me the following error message:

***An exception of class Nilobjectexception was not handled. The application must shut down.***

If I use your utility to load from a hard drive directory, again only one file is recognized (vts_01_1.mpeg) from the directory. When this file is used, the utility finds 5 VOB files, generates the VLST, successfully runs QSF on the file, saves the file to the designated directory, and closes Videoredo. The utility appears to resolve my issues if I first load DVD files to the hard drive. :) Wahoo!

Why does Windows label these files as Mpeg's when your utility and DVD decrypter label these files as Vob's? Is it related to my STB dvd recorder (panasonic ES20)?

I tried your utility on a second dvd (Die Hard 2, loaded to the HD by DVD encrypter). This movie came from Fox movie channel and didn't have commercials but had a long "talking head segment" that I wanted to delete. I selected the copy/qsf/ad option. The files were successfully combined, QSF ran successfully, and ad ran successfully (putting in scene marks at dark spots in the movie and around the talking head segment).

Awesome! Your utility is marvelous! Just what I wanted the program to do! :D

I still have to finish and finalize the edits this evening. Should be able to burn a couple DVD's this evening! Wahoo!

Thanks, Pat!

Best,

Rick

You may have gotten this error because my program does not decrypt DVDs.

Windows may have been describing them as type mpeg. XXX.mpeg would be an extension for the file.

Glad you like the program!

Pat,

Did I read this right? You're developing an authoring module? If so, When will it be done approximately?

BTW, I tried burning one of my dvd projects tonight. The original movie was 4.4 GB and was downsized to 3.07 GB by VRD after deleting commercials and "talking head commentary". My burning software (Nero Express) bloats the file back up to 3.7 GB and then says not enough room to burn on a DVD... Grrrrr... I'm looking for a better authoring program. Any Tips?

Best,

Rick

We're planning to have a Beta around the end of March.

For authoring, you should review the links I posted.

For free, I think DVD Styler is easy to use providing your video is DVD compliant.

I'm looking for a better authoring program. Any Tips?I love MuxMan for making simple "first play" (no menu) DVDs. Process is very simple:

1. DVDCopy the VIDEO_TS to a single .mpg file
2. Open w/VRD+ and make final edits if necessary, and add Scene Markers to output a Chapters.txt file (just a list of frame numbers)
3. Save from VRD+ as Elementary Streams
4. Open the video, audio, and chapters.txt file in MuxMan v0.15p and process to a new VIDEO_TS folder
5. Burn as-is (I use RecordNow and ImgBurn)

MuxMan is a wonderful free program!

Thanks Laserfan!

Nice cookbook listing, exactly what a newbie like me needs! :)

Just one question, do you use *both* Recordnow and Imgburn in the final step or just one depending upon your current project?

I'll give it all a try tonight!

Rick

...do you use *both* Recordnow and Imgburn in the final step or just one depending upon your current project?Oh, no, sorry these are the two apps I've been alternating between lately to burn my DVDs. Either (not both!) is very good--RN is not freeware but ImgBurn is.

I used to use Nero until it became "bloatware" and though I suspect there is a simple "burn a VIDEO_TS to DVD" somewhere in the package I couldn't tell you where...it does appear that Nero Express wants to re-encode. Bad, bad!

Thanks, Laserfan! Your approach worked for me! Wahoo! I burned one coaster when I made a user error in building the iso image (neglected to name the folder correctly). After reading an IMGBURN guide, I was able to correctly build the iso image. Amazing how beneficial instructions can be... ;)

I'm not sure what I did wrong but Muxman reported no chapters in my input file. I had inserted event markers every 10 minutes in Videoredo during the edit process and saved. What approach do you use to set up chapters?

Thanks again, Laserfan!

Rick

I'm not sure what I did wrong but Muxman reported no chapters in my input file.MuxMan's Chapters import selection is not on the main dialog--it's in the Menu bar called oddly enough Import Chapter. ;) Did you make any attempt to import? Once you have Imported the .txt file it shows-up in the dialog at the bottom (in tiny print!). Otherwise it says "No chapters" there.

Also of course make sure VRD+ has actually OUTPUT the chapters.txt file to begin with--open it with Notepad or something and you'll see the frame numbers for your markers. You have to set-up VRD to output this file--it doesn't do it automagically. Lemme look a sec...

Ok under Tools>Options>Chapter Marks make sure under Output format that "Automatically Create..." is checked, then Text File, %F_Chapters.txt, and Line Format %N.

This will make a txt file that you must Import.

Glad it's working for you--as easy as it is to set Scene markers w/VRD+ I try to do this every time I make a DVD!

Very clear directions, thanks Laserfan!

Uhhh, no, I didn't see "import chapters" on the menu bar.... LOL, I need to be a bit more observant! :) I did see the "no chapters" but wanted to burn a DVD so continued on.

I'll try another disk tonight. Your tips have been most helpful!

See my post in the Third Party Software section, titled Author w/ your app - burn DVD w/ NERO (http://www.videoredo.net/msgBoard/showthread.php?t=3744)
for info on (only) burning DVDs built by your authoring app.

I'd written it as a comment here, then decided to move it to its own thread.

Laserfan,

I made the following selections under tools/options/chapter marks:
checked automatically create chapter file
checked chapter marks at cut points (8 in file)
checked use equal spacing (5 min interval)
set minimum chapter interval at 60 secs

VRD included a chapter txt file when project saved as elementary streams.

Muxman successfully processed the file but only two chapters were found. I burned the disk and chapter 2 starts before the movie... No other chapters in the file. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Rick

...only two chapters were found. I burned the disk and chapter 2 starts before the movie...I don't understand--how can a chapter start "before the movie"?

I'd look at two things:

-- First the chapters file Imported to muxman-how many frames do you see listed (they are on their own line). Does that look reasonable for the no. of cuts you made and the length of the program?

--Look also at the VRD log (it's in the VRD program directory). I believe it shows what VRD is outputting re: chapter marks-to-file.

I've never tried both "use cut points" and "time interval" at the same time. If you can't get this right you should start a new thread ("Chapter problems" or some such) under Support.

Seems to me that sometimes MuxMan doesn't like the last framenumber in a chapters.txt file, fixed simply by deleting that framenumber, but that's the only problem I've ever seen with it.

p.s. I hope you are testing your VIDEO_TS output with some player software before burning to disc? Discs are cheap but time is not!!??!!

Hi Laserfan,

***I don't understand--how can a chapter start "before the movie"?***

I cut 13 segments from the original file. The first cut trimmed material at the beginning of the file. Apparently, VRD put a chapter mark at the start of the first cut and a chapter mark at the end of the first cut. Thus, two chapters, both at the beginning of the file. (Shrug), that's my guess...

*** First the chapters file Imported to muxman-how many frames do you see listed (they are on their own line). Does that look reasonable for the no. of cuts you made and the length of the program?****

The chapters txt file lists 28 frames marked. There is a chapter mark every 5 minutes plus some in between where cuts took place. It appears that VRD put in the requested chapter marks, but, for some reason, they were not incorporated by Muxman.

*** Look also at the VRD log (it's in the VRD program directory). I believe it shows what VRD is outputting re: chapter marks-to-file.***

I couldn't find a log file in the VRD program directory... I searched for a log using the search engine and manually looked at each file... The chapters txt file does show the correct number of chapters.

Oops... I see what I did wrong. I had the line format as %T rather than %N.
 sorry... My bad.

***p.s. I hope you are testing your VIDEO_TS output with some player software before burning to disc? Discs are cheap but time is not!!??!!***

Yes, I make sure that it will start with PowerDVD and then fast forward through at least half before burning.

Thanks for your help Laserfan!

laserfan, when I use MuxMan, I have to save the audio for the elementary stream as PCM/WAVE in VRD, which greatly increases the file size. Does MuxMan work with any other audio file types?

I tried MuxMan once, after reading glowing reports about it here.
It took mpeg audio just fine. Don't use wave.

As for checking your work, that's certainly essential as you get started.
Helps build confidence and gets you onto the right track from the beginning.
Once you have a few dozen discs under your belt, you won't bother any more.

Well, I wrote too soon last night. Muxman recognized the correct number of chapters and did finalize it's processing. The resulting video will play through to the end *but* chapters are not available. If I try to advance to next chapter, PowerDVD stops completely and goes to it's initial screen. Not sure where to go from here... Any thoughts?

PowerDVD does correctly advance chapters on the original DVD.

Thanks,

Rick

Hmmm, did MuxMan report any errors? On my PC, its log is found at C:\muxman.log IIRC.

Maybe if you post both VRD's relevant log output and muxman's log we can figure this out.

Hmmm, the logs do not match up. I had saved with chapters at the cuts only as my first attempt. The second attempt I saved the chapters at 5 minute intervals only. The Muxman log appears to save only the last run. Scene markers are at 5 minute intervals and according to the log, the video ends ~1h, 5m rather than 3h+. The log is correct, the current output file from Muxman (chapters at 5 min intervals) is only a little over 1h in length.

Hope the above helps a little rather than muddying the water...

Hi Rick, I don't know what's happening with this and was hoping one of the VRD guys would jump-in.

The key I think is that your MuxMan chapters.txt file is accurate wrt frame numbers. So the next time you do this, before you mux with MuxMan, open that file, make note of the frame numbers you see there, and use VRD's Frame number view (instead of time codes) to see if they look like they're in the right place.

The only time I have seen MuxMan error-out in re: the frame number file is if it has a frame at the very End of the program. But you would get an error and it would clue you-in to (simply) delete that frame# (using Notepad or some such) and re-run.

You're gonna shortly be an expert on Chapters I think! I don't do this but once ever few months...

Sorry for the dumb question, I havehad this program for a cpl of months, but just started trying to figure it out. I have a Ad Dective question:

I have performed a scan on a .tivo file, and see where the ads are marked...how the heck do i delete them, and save the new, uncommercial version?

any help would be appreciated. Hitting me upside the head with a wet noodle for such a basic question is also permitted.

If you do, simply save a new output file.
