I recorded 2 one hour programs with three ad breaks in each. The recordings were mpegs from standard definitiion digital tv.
I edited out the ads with VRD and saved as mpg.

Now I am trialling DVD lab. If I assemble the mpgs into dvdlab and start to compile a dvd image, it soon crashes with a serious error.

Whether I demux or not, I can scan the "asset" for bitrates and notice that although the average bitrate is 6kbps, there are spikes of up to 10kbps or higher at the edit cuts. Could this be the cause of dvdlabs crashes?

I can get dvd lab to author each program on its own and play it with a dvd player, proving the files are ok, but only when assembled together the dvdlab can't compile the dvd.

I don't agree that I need to reencode, and I don't wish to wait ten years for tmpgenc to do it, I would have expected the edited files produced by VRD to be dvd compliant.

What would the cause of the bitrate spikes be though?

The bitrate at cuts points is encoded at the highest quality, but we aim for keeping the bitrate similar to the original source.

What version of DVDLab are you using?
