View Full Version : PTS underflows:3 - Good news? Bad News?

Am still exploring VRD as I run several TV shows through it to remove the commercials. Found you could check out a logfile.

Noticed my last three files all had ended with the text I placed in the subject of this message.

Is this good or bad? Will I have problems with these files when I go to author the DVD? Should I stop reading logfiles? Do I have too much time on my hands? :)

TIA,

Here's the info from the Help file:
PTS underflows occur when the presentation time stamps (PTS) fall behind the system clocks in the program pack stream headers(SCR). An MPEG program stream has two sets of time stamps, one for the overall file and another for each elementary audio and video stream. The PTS underflow indicates that the bit rate for at least one of the elementary streams exceeds the overall bit rate for the entire file (SCR).
A few ( < 100) PTS underflow errors will not affect the output program. You can increase the overall bit rate of the file by overriding the video bit rate on the Output Options dialog (mk:@MSITStore:C:\Program%20Files\VideoReDoPlus\VR D-Plus.chm::/DlgOutputOptions.htm).

Note: If you intend to author this file to a DVD, the overall bit rate should not exceed 10 Mbps.

What's the source of your files?

What output format are you choosing?

If you are outputting MPG files, you can increase the header bitrate by clicking the Options button in the file save dialog box.

Thanks for that pointer.

What's the source of your files?
MPEG2 files recorded by WinTV at 4.5 Mbps. FWIW, when I was recording at MPEG 12 Mbps, I never had a PTS underflow.

What output format are you choosing?
I'm currently saving as MPEG2 after deleting commercials and also as .vobs.
(Still haven't decided if I want to author with DVDAuthor (thus the .vob) or Ulead DMF4 (thus the .mpg))

If you are outputting MPG files, you can increase the header bitrate by clicking the Options button in the file save dialog box.
Here I get lost because I have no idea to what I should be increasing the header bitrate.

According to the help file blurb you posted:
A few ( < 100) PTS underflow errors will not affect the output program
Is this something I need to worry about? Or something I can safely ignore?

Appreciate the assistance. Thanks.

Load the file and press Ctrl+L and bump it up to the next highest number. Maximum of 10 for DVD authoring (You could just set it to 10)

If the authoring program doesn't complain, no need to readjust.

And this would be done in the output options of the 'Save As' dialog? All three files involved reported bitrates of 7.20 Mbps. So If I upped the output bitrate to 8.0 Mbps, this should do away with the PTS underflows? Does this affect file size?

Thanks for the patience and the help.

It does not affect the file size. This setting merely changes the bitrate that appears in the header.

Thanks for the info, Pat.
