I've been using VideoReDo to trim the beginning and endings from some video I've taken. To my great frustration, I now realize that VideoReDo has deleted everything longer than 30 minutes. Why? I've permanently lost some very important (to me) footage. What is going on? I can't describe how irritated I am. Can anyone help me or do I need to find a new software program to edit with?
Betsy
The trial version of VideoReDo restricts you to 30 minutes unless you request a trial key. There's a pretty big message box telling you about this whenever you try to output a program longer than 30 minutes.
Once you request a trial registration key, all program restrictions and nag screens are removed.

Thank you, Dan.
You explained that in the trial version any file longer than 30 minutes was truncated. You say that there was a warning, but I never saw a warning Before sending this e-mail I tried to save a forty minute file, just to see what I had missed and there was an offer to get the key now, but no warning that video would be truncated or lost. In any case, I appreciate the information. I will, therefore, never even consider buying this program because of this bad experience. I just wouldn't put money in the hands of people who allow video to be dropped so easily. These were precious family memories that are now permanently lost.
Thank you for explaining it to me, though.

Betsy,
I don't understand how you could lose your video unless you erased it yourself. VideoReDo, NEVER overwrites the original file. It only creates new files when you save your video. What happened to your original video? If you didn't erase it, then it should still be there. We are ALWAYS sensitive to these issues.
BTW, Here is the text that is displayed: As this is an unregistered,
trial version of VideoReDo, the output file has been truncated to 30 minutes

It sounds like you need to get in someone to find these videos on your computer. Like the author stated, VideoReDo will not delete or overwrite the original file, nor would you want to.
I usually load the original, do my editing, then "Save Video As..." and use VRD's default naming convention, which is ALWAYS different from the original file name.
I will delete the original, only when I'm happy with the modified version.
Do you have the original tape that you copied from? You could revert to that.
You can also try doing a search for all mpg's on your computer by searching for a file with the file name: *.mpg this will find all mpg's on your computer.
I would advise you to call someone who is more familiar with computers though, as, if these are the only copies you have, you may not have deleted them, and they may be able to locate them.

Yikes. For my "precious family memories" I've still got the original tapes (in a fire-proof safe when they aren't at the Bank), raw capture files (on the computer), VRD cleaned-up files (backed-up to DVD), DVD images (on the computer), and the final DVDs themselves.
Who the heck would trust a program that the are just trying (and haven't even registered let alone bought) with the ONLY COPY?
I think betsbets is no longer responding.

seems so. i wanna add:
lesson 1: ALWAYS edit the COPY of the original
lesson 1: ALWAYS edit the COPY of the original With all due respect Harry, there is no need to do this. VideoReDo should never ever write or delete the original file. Unlike some other programs which will update the original with GOP fixers or other stuff, VideoReDo doesn't do that.

i meant it globally, Dan. nobody should ever edit the original. not if it is of a certain personal value.
i did a lot of file conversions from my digicam to mpeg2. i still edit the copy, though i know for sure that videoredo doesn't touch it. it simply gives a feeling of 100% safety.
i mean i don't even trust windows. what if i accidentally get a bluescreen while i open a file and read it and hence get bad cluser links and hence the file is damaged? unprobable, but not 100% unprobable. hence i take the 5 minutes of copying time instead of having to re-read the whole 1 hour movie into my system.
i only follow the 3 rules of computer technology i learned in school:
rule nr. 1: backup
rule nr. 2: backup
rule nr. 3: backup
