View Full Version : jerky images after newbie edits tivo files for dvd
i just bought vrd and am thrilled with it so far. the editing is fairly simple - i'm importing tivo files (using the tivo's wireless connection to my network), editing out commercials and then burning them to dvd.
i did my first last night - using nero 7 premium as follows:.
1. edited the tivo files using vrb
2. save as .vob
3. burn using nero 7 premium.
the video got very herky-jerky as if it was stuttering, but the audio stayed synced. anybody have any suggestions on what to do/how to fix that? i have no clue and i'm weeding thru as much of the forums on tivo as i can.
Did Nero author a DVD or simply burn it to disk?
If you authored a DVD with VOB, IFO and BUP files, did you author and burn as 2 separate steps?
Does the authored DVD folder play back OK on your computer?
hmmm...good question on authoring vs. burning a dvd. i THINK i authored the dvd. i went into nero and went thru the process to "make a dvd movie." this gave me the options to add chapters, put in text, create a menu etc. once i did that, it automatically burned, so i am not sure if that's authoring then burning or what. but the whole process was seamless and simple - it just didn't work!

however, i also noticed that when i just edited a tivo file on vrd and then watched the file as an .mpg, it was herky-jerky too. i did the same file as a vob and had the same experience. i went in and qsf-ed it, too, in the hopes this would fix it, but no luck. same experience.
what the heck is going on? when i tested the program for 30 days - i simply edited, saved as vob and burned using dvdstyler and had no such problems. i've read as much of the forum as possible and the pdfs too...
any help would be GREATLY appreciated. i want to make this program work!
thanks.
just tried a totally separate tivo file to see if it was the file and the same result - VERY jerky/stuttering mpg. when i ran THAT through qsf, still didn't work right. i'm inclined to uninstall the program and reinstall to see if that's the problem.
VERY frustrated.
here's what the last show i did to try to retest it said:

Did you try playing the edited/QSF'd file back in VideoReDo to see how it went?
If not, what player did you play the .mpg file in? It may be that the MPEG2 decoder filter you have installed on your PC is causing the problem. It is also not unheard of for Nero to take the output from VRD and then turn it into a mess by re-encoding it.
Also, don't bother saving out of VRD as a .vob if you are looking to import into Nero (.vob is for DVDStyler/gui_for_dvdauthor/dvdauthor related tool only) - save as a .mpg for Nero.
Have you tried doing what you did during the trial: edit with VRD, save as VOB format (but with .mpg extension on the file), import into and author with DVDStyler, to see if the problem still occurs with that combination?
Have you changed any of the recording settings on your Tivo since the time it was working?

How long did nero take to author the DVD? What percentage was the Nero Smart encoding?
I have found that when nero reencode the video, I get jettery output especially when there is a lot of motion in the scene. Nero always reencodes my audio because it is captured mpeg and the DVD wants to be ac3.
I go out of my way to ensure no reencoding by Nero
i have not tried using dvdstyle.
the 'authoring' took about 30 mins with nero...i assume it was converting the video.
however, EVEN when i watched the video after i qsf'ed it - (using windowsmedia player) it was jerky, making me think it must be vrd that's doing it.
how do i KEEP nero from doing any reconversion?
help!
thanks
