Well one of the easiest ways would be before you use Windows Movie maker on them.
What you could do is record your movies on to DVD using a standalone DVD recorder.
Then use the guides on here for extracting your DVD recording and editing in VideoReDo - then onwards to whatever you want to do with using Windows Movie maker.
VideoReDo is an mpeg2 editor - so DVD content, and captures / recordings in the mpeg2 domain. Windows Movie maker tends to be used for direct DV recordings / encodings from sources - such as camcorders - and normally either uncompressed, or compressed AVI container files.

Thanks for your help
She could also use Nero Vision Express to convert her .avi files to MPEG and then edit them in VRD.
