View Full Version : MPEG file reducer mentioned on board recently.

I want to reduce MPEG2 files captured at 12MB to MPEG files at a lower bit rate, say 2MB.
Dan has given me a couple of avenues to try, among them that an application doing this has been mentioned on the board quite recently.
Does anyone have more information?
Thank you.

Were you looking for more information on that application or other options?
If a specific application, which one are you referring to?
Also, which DVD authoring application do you use? Do you use or have other video editing software? They may already have this capability.

I capture the material I am working with at MPEG 12MB with a Hauppagge capture card, trim and split it with Video Redo and burn it on to dvds using Nero Express, which I store for later reference.
However, I would like to store it on a hard disc. But since there are about 50GB a week of files to be stored if I leave it at 12MB, I am looking for a way to reduce the file size for hard disc storage
I am aware that this will significantly reduce the picture quality, but if it is necessary, I can go back to the dvds. It is much quicker to go to the material if it is on hard disc if instant feference is wanted.
Dan R very kindly mentioned that there was an application that reduces the bit rate and thus the file size of the MPEG files, but he could not remeber the name of the application.
It is that name I am seeking.
I am no expert in this field and if there is another way, I would very much like to hear it.
Thank you for your help.

I might have mentioned this one I was trialing.
http://www.mediostream.com/products/index_xtreammpeg.html
It seems to work very quick and gives decent quality. They have a free trial available. On my P4 2.4 GHz, it did better than real time encoding I believe. There are settings for both speed and qulaity. Also has the capability to stream video as a server to another PC on your network.
You also might want to check out Mainconcept Encoder as well as Canopus Procoder.
Also, ypou might want to check out WMV encoding for an even smaller file size. Doesn't leave the files in a DVD compatible file but they will be smaller than MPEG.

Here's the other tool I heard about on this board:
ReJig http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/video_tools/rejig.cfm
Never used it, so can't vouch for it.

ReJig is a transcoder. It works quite well. Think of it as DVDShrink for MPG files instead of DVD. When the MPG is run through ReJig, you'll wind up with an elementary video stream, so you'll have to mux it with the audio from the original MPG file.

Also, by the same author is a program called ReQuant. Port of the Linux version I believe.

I trust Barry, or anyone else who cares to assist a tyro, will not become a "bitter old man" when they read my "basic" question.
I tried REJIG & found it does "MPG Shrink" well. But HOW does one mux the audio back in again ?
Rejig & PVAStrumento offer DEMUX but not mux. Is there a simple program to achieve this result ?

I haven't used rejig, but there's a free tool called MPLEX that will remux elementary streams. However, most DVD authoring programs will accept elementary streams and remux for you.

Another free muxer is ImagoMPEG-Muxer, but the site seems to have disappeared. If you need a copy, let me know. The Google cache for the site is here: http://64.233.187.104/search?q=cache:16C4sEKQLM0J:imagox.homeip.net/+Imago+Muxer&hl=en
The easiest way to use ReJig is to load your MPG into VRD and save it as elementary streams. Then you will have a video file (.mpv) and an audio file (.mpa or .ac3). Load the .mpv into Rejig, which generates the .m2v file. Then take the .m2v file and the audio file and multiplex (mux) them, or import the .m2v and audio file directly into your DVD authoring program.

Thanks guys.
I scoured the web for both (a) MPLEX & (b) ImagoMPEG-Muxer
(a) there seem to be only versions for Linux & Beos offered ( I use XP)
(b) many comments that this is a useful tool, but all downloads lead to dead ends.
I would appreciate if someone could email me a copy of these.
thanks,
Peter B

If you use mplex and your files are over 2000MB then you must use '-S 0' so your file is not cut every 2GB. mplexWin32 default is 0 (no limit) so is better to use mplexWin32.exe

Is there a HTTP link to both of these (mplex and mplexwin32)?
I have mplex as part of some of the dvdauthor GUIs, but wouldn't mind it standalone. And I seem to have a problem with browsing ftp folders when at work.

I posted mplex.zip to our ftp site: ftp://upload:upload@videoredo.net
mplex is part of the mjpegtool set from here: http://mjpeg.sourceforge.net/
