View Full Version : Video Jerky on wider moving shots

I use VRD to remove commercials from DVR-MS files. I then export to .VOB and use Premier Elements 2.0 to place chapter markers and make DVD menus. (So far after much trial this is the best solution for me). When the DVD is finished the end result is only disappointing in that on scenes where the is a lot of panning and motion the screen image is "jerky". It wasn't jerky from the raw DVR-MS on VRD nor did I notice it after conversion to .VOB.
I have been pulling my hair out over this same issue of DVR-MS (with no commerials) to DVD for weeks now  and I know there's got to be a better way.
*I am working with the trial version of VideoReDo at the moment to see if $49.99 is worth the price. If Video ReDo could burn a DVD ... I'd be sold in a heart beat! I purchased Premier Elements last year (so I don't want to buy another "editor" and I see that I can upgrade to Roxio's Easy MEdia Creator now for $49.99 which of course does much more than VRD for the same price...BUT I do love the interface, speed and stability of VideoReDo.
Someone please... HELP A BROTHER OUT !
Thanks in advance for your help!

Load the VOB from the finished DVD created by PE2 into VRD. Does it look jerky also?
How long is it taking for PE2 to create the DVD? Is it reencoding perhaps at a lower quality and bitrate?

What are you playing this back on to notice the errors?
I've notived this issue in the past, but it was nothing to do with the editing process, it turned out to be 2 reasons, kind of related:
1. My original playback was on a cheap supermarket DVD player, playing it back through a better (Toshiba) player got rid of all the problems.
2. The software MPEG-2 decoder I was using in the PC was not up to scratch, trying another decoder (Intervideo) solved the problem.
(Proof positive that you get what you pay for??)
Of course, your issue may not be related, but the description of the noticably jerky wide shots is identical.
One thing to note with VRD versus Roxio's easy media creator is that VRD does a stream fix to correct corruption in the video stream.
Roxio's EMC doesn't do that, if you feed it video with any corruption, it just kicks up errors and won't let you process it, or will leave the corruption in, which will make any DVD's either not play properly, or you'll notice the video/audio sync slipping and getting progressively worse throughout playback.
Actually, the 2 software apps aren't really a like-for-like comparrison.
If you look here http://www.videoredo.net/msgBoard/showthread.php?t=4604 you will see that DVD authoring is coming to VRD and that even if you buy VRD now, you won't be paying more than the price difference between versions to upgrade, so there's no reason to wait from a financial point of view.

I would guess the the frames per second is getting changed somewhere along the track - I'm guessing Premier Elements. PAL=25FPS, NTSC=30FPS. Look for a setting in Premier Elements for any of the above.

Thanks, PHD for the advice. (Sorry it took so long to respond)
I looked at the editied .vob file from VRD and the wide shot pans were not jerky.
It takes about an hour and a half to burn the PE2 DVD. I don't see the jiggle on the "preview" monitor but it's on the finished DVD.
I know this is not a PE2 forum and I'm very encouraged by damoUK's comment about DVD authoring in VDR soon. I'm sure you understand that I simply want a finished product and I would like to find the most efficient route to get there without re-purchasing several different kinds of software.
P.S. I did purchase the AVS 4 You program for 1 year. Video conversion, etc. No luck with that Never could get the audio to sync. Has anyone else here heard of these folks? http://www.avs4you.com/
Thanks for the replies.

If the VOBs from the finished DVD play back smoothly in VRD and the DVD does not, you may have a media incompatibility issue between your player and the DVD.
One of the cheapest options is simply to try a different brand or type of DVD to see if that resolves your issue.

I have Premier Elements as well. While it is a FANTASIC non-linear editor, the MPEG encoder is very questionable. It does great on DV source material, but has absolutely failed miserably to decently encode any MPEG I through at it. Usually I get wierd artifacts, like black bars, lines, or flashes in the video. I do not know why, but have pretty much completely given up on it for anything other than DV material. I know it's not real help, but you need to try a different authoring program.
For simple DVDs, I've been playing recently with Rejig and have been reasonably impressed. Muxman has similar capability that I often see recommended. Both are free.
