I posed the question in the Features section, that I'd love the ability to split off the audio into an mp3.
Pat replied:
You currently have the ability to save the file as elementary streams. From there you could use the audio for your own purposes. Either convert it to an MP3 with another program as well as some programs will accept it as an MP3 by a simple rename.
I am stuffed if I can work out how to do this. Sorry to be dense, could you explain what you mean when you say save the file as elementary streams?

in your file -> save as dialog you can select "elementary streams" as file type. it will split your file then into audio and video.
in tools -> options -> general parameters there's an option "default output elementary streams" so you can set this output as default if you like.
i think that's what you need.
as for audio conversion:
1. get besweet, it's a freeware command line audio conversion utilitiy
http://dspguru.notrace.dk/
2. get belight, a very simplified gui for it
http://www.free-codecs.com/download/BeLight.htm
load ac3 stream, selection your desired output, convert it :D
here's more info and a screenshot.

Thanks so much! I can't believe I never noticed the drop down menu before with elementary streams as an option.
Will download bewseet soon. Thanks again! :D

well, tbh: me neither. i had no idea that it was possible. had to check first as well when you placed your question.
normally i would search it in the Tools menu under a Demux button. maybe it's something Dan should add (symbolic link to save-as with elementary streams preset?).
same for eg the "capture frame" function. i wouldn't think it would be under the "Edit" menu, as it's no edit functionality. i usually edit with mouse only and don't dig into menus. i find it circumvent having to switch mouse/keyboard/mouse/keyboard/... so i didn't even know til last week that videoredo was capable of doing movie still captures. guess how happy i was  when i found out :D as i previously captured the frames with powerdvd, but powerdvd sucks in that aspect as it has wrong frame ratio and wrong frame size when you do a screenshot with it's built in screenshot function. i always had to resize the frames to correct ratio and size with coreldraw afterwards.

Harry,
Actually, I think of capture frame as an edit function. It copies the current frame to either the clpboard and also offers you the flexibility of saving directly to a file as BMP format. The keyboard shortcut is Ctrl+C which is the standard "copy" function. Perhaps its name should be changed to "Copy Frame" instead.
You might want to check out the "Keyboard Shortcuts" available under the Help menu to other cool shortcuts. Also available under the full "Help" file under Reference/Keyboard Shortcuts.
Some of the shortcuts are not documented under the help file if its a recent function that is only available in the newer Betas.
What I usually like to do when a new Beta is posted is look at the posting Dan makes containing the new features of a Beta for the new functionality. I usually try them out immediately to see if I want to start using its functions. Usually Keyboard shortcuts are listed there. Also it would be impossible to have button equivalents of all the keyboard shortcuts that are listed in the menus. The VRD editing window would become much too cluttered with buttons to be useful.
A couple of others that I find useful are:
Ctrl+F4 - close current file and leave VRD open.
Alt+Enter - Maximize Window (Full Screen) / Restore Window toggle
Perhaps we users should create a sticky under Features forum where people can list tips and shortcuts we find useful that Dan could incorporate into the "Tip of the Day." This way they wouldn't get buried in the release notes for the older Betas.
What do you think?

hi Pat,
imho the edit function only refers to videoredo. a capture frame function has nothing to do with editing the video. that's why i didn't look there. it's all a matter of intuition.

I downloaded besweet and belight this morning, Harry. Took me a little while to make it work -- the wizard simply didn't want to work at all. Turned that off and figured it out and am now a happy camper. By the way my screen looks nothing like yours. maybe I have a different version, who knows!
So can we talk dan into a convert to mp3 as well? :D

There will be lots more audio processing options available starting in Q2 '05. Format conversions, volume adjustments, selective fading, etc.

slkx, I think you downloaded BeSweetGUI instead of BeLight.

I rest my case -- I can't even remember to login!
I have now downloaded the right interface and it's beautiful, thanks. I also worked out why the GUI wizard wasn't working before -- I hadn't moved the files into the same one as besweet.
Yeesh, what was I saying about Christmas brain...?

This has to be the best news ever for videoredo for me Q2 '05 is way to long of a wait. For instance could do with the selective fading right now on a daily basis. All the best proffesional video editors have a full range of audio editing manipulation tools. Videoredo takes on all, with no prisoners. :D
