Keeping subtitles

I have several foreign language films that I want to extract scenes from and retain the english subtitles.

Using VRD, I can successfully keep the scenes I want. But VRD dosn't handle subtitles.

Tried Ulead MovieFactory v4 SE. Again unless I'm doing something wrong, it doesn't keep the subtitles. Played with Nero Vision Express v3, and again no subtitles.

Any suggestions what other software I might investigate? Don't really want to spend money just to do these few scenes.

Appreciate any assistance.

I suspect that the reason for not keeping sub-titles (other than those that are embedded by the movie producer as part of the actual movie frame) is that the sub-title info lives in the vertical interval part of the syncronizing signal.
There is a possibilty that I am wrong about this. I was wrong once before 8^)

I believe for Ulead, you would have to graduate to DVD Workshop for subtitles.

DVD Lab will do subtitles. It has a free trial. If you only want to do it this one time, just use the free trial and don't buy it.

Thanks, Pat, for the clarification. Someone in another forum suggested trying DVD Shrink in Reauthor mode. --Using Start/Stop Frame, save off desired clip. Repeat for each scene, placing each clip in its own directory.
Later, again using reauthor mode, combine clips into a compilation DVD. Will have to give it a try.

Thanks zz5. DVD Lab seems to be a Swissknife of DVD authoring. May have to check it out one day.

Boulder. These are commercial DVDs that I've ripped to my harddrive, thus standard VOB, IFO, etc..

As mentioned to Pat, it has been suggested to use DVD Shrink. Will be trying that once I've some time to play. Will post back to this thread on my success or failure.

Not exactly a realm of DVD Labs I've looked into, but they have outstanding on-line help

A lot of what DLP can do is described here with sufficient info to get it going.

If you're still uncertain, you might try one of their forums (http://www.mmbforums.com/ipb/index.php?showforum=37).
Though if you ask too simple a question in their more advanced forums (DVD Labs Pro (http://www.mmbforums.com/ipb/index.php?showforum=24)), ya might get the cold shoulder.
Many there are pro's, and they don't much care for non-standard video formats like I get off satellite. :cool:

Just to update my original post with the solution I found that works.

Using DVDShrink in re-author mode, import DVD from Hard Drive. Use Start/Stop to select the first scene, export to hard drive. Repeat as necessary for remaining scenes. You can then merge each scene into a single file using DVD Shrink.

However I also own DVD Remake Pro, that has a great Merge feature of up to 4 DVDs. It creates a title menu and allows editing of post commands so you can play each scene one after the other.

Both software handle multiple audio and Subpicture (Subtitle) streams without issue.

All in all, not as complicated as it sounds. And it worked!.
