I just downloaded the trial version of VideoReDo Plus and am trying to convert a DVR-MS file to a TS. Whenever I try this I get the following error:
Mpeg Stream Error: File may be DVR-MS "restricted content".
Immediately upon saving. The file, however, saves just fine as a MPG file. I've tried different files and get the same result.
Any ideas what might be wrong?
No idea. Open the source file and click on Tools>Show program info and paste the results here.
How much of the source gets saved to the TS before you get the error?

The file is zero bytes - I don't think it even gets started.
One file:
File Name: Friday Night Lights_KING-DT_10_06_2007_20_58_11.dvr-ms
File Size: 0 ( 0.00 GB )
Program Duration: 01:04:47.22
File Type: DVR-MS
Encoding: MPEG 2
Video stream Id: xE0
Encoding Dimensions: 1920 x 1080
Display Size: 1920 x 1080
Aspect Ratio: 16/9
Frame Rate: 29.97 FPS
Bit Rate: 16.000 Mbps
VBV_Buffer: 976 KB
Profile: Main/High
Progressive: Prog or Int
Chroma: 4:2:0
Audio Format: 5.1
Audio Stream Id: Raw PS1
Audio Bit Rate: 384 Kbps
Audio Sampling Rate: 48000 Hz
The other:
File Name: I'll Be Home for Christmas_KOMO-DT_24_12_2005_21_00_01.dvr-ms
File Size: 0 ( 0.00 GB )
Program Duration: 01:59:57.09
File Type: DVR-MS
Encoding: MPEG 2
Video stream Id: xE0
Encoding Dimensions: 1280 x 720
Display Size: 1280 x 720
Aspect Ratio: 16/9
Frame Rate: 59.94 FPS
Bit Rate: 18.031 Mbps
VBV_Buffer: 976 KB
Profile: Main/High
Progressive: Progressive Only
Chroma: 4:2:0
Audio Format: 2.0
Audio Stream Id: Raw PS1
Audio Bit Rate: 384 Kbps
Audio Sampling Rate: 48000 Hz
OK, nothing obvious from that. In fact I just created some .TS streams directly from HD dvr-ms files without any problem. My guess is that something is amiss when trying to sample the source dvr-ms file to determine the mux rate.
There are three things to try:
1) On the Tools>Options>Transport page, change the Output Mux Rate from "Automatic" to Manual, 20 Mbps. This bypass the sampling that occurs at the beginning of the TS output.
2) Hold down the Shift key and go to Tools>Options. This will bring you to the manual setting. About 1/2 way down the list is "Number of MBytes before warning of restricted contect". Change the default value of "3" to something larger say 6 or 10 Mb.
3) Just for kicks, try saving to .mpg and then converting the .mpg to TS. Would be interested to know if that works.

#1 and #3 seem to work.
w.r.t #1 - is there any side effect of that - does the bit rate actually become 20Mbps for example?
For #3 - I noticed that when I first hit save, a dlg pops up and counts down the sampling (when in auto mode) - that never happened when going straight from DVR-MS to TS (in auto mode)... in case that helps track anything down.
No, the actual video bit rate remains unchanged. I.e. no change in quality or any other side effects. In fact, our latest beta has an "ATSC" option which is ideal for saving HD material recorded off the air here in North America.
When in auto mode you should always see a countdown when saving to TS regardless of the source type. We see if here so perhaps when you don't see it in DVR-MS > TS is related to the original problem.

Thanks... so are we interested in tracking this down:

And/or should I try the beta?
You can try the beta, but its unlikely to make any difference here (but you never know). Can you reproduce with a short dvr-ms file? Say one that is less than 200 or 300 MB? Then this file can be uploaded to our FTP site. Another option is to simply put the whole file on a DVD and mail it to us.
One more thing you can try. Take the original DVR-MS and output it to DVR-MS. THen try converting DVR-MS file to .TS with automatic sampling turned on. This will tell us if the fault lies in the structure of the DVR-MS wrapper for this specific file.
How about a dvr-ms file you create in VideoReDo itself?

Ok, I've tried:
- converting a DVR-MS to DVR-MS (within VideoReDo) and then tried creating a TS from the "new" DVR-MS, I get the same error.
- I tried converting a VOB to DVR-MS and then to TS and get the same error
- I tried converting a random MPG file my brother sent me to DVR-MS and then TS and get the same error.
I truncated one of the original files that I found the problem with to about 240MB and it still reproduces. If you'd like me to upload, let me know where.

I'm having the same problem. Recording OTA ATSC on a vista machine, and then editing on an xp machien with vrd. when I go to save as a TS file it says "restricted content." The manual bitrate setting lets it work though, as does mpg conversion first, then ts.
