I get this error message sometimes on trying to open a video:
"Unable to play video:
Unable to initialize the video display.
Please check VideoReDo.log"
I have checked the log, but it hasn't shed any light for me. So far, this has happened with either build 546 only, or 545 and 546, but I don't remember it happening before that. Once I get this error, even videos I had successfully opened before in the same session will give this error. I am using Vista Home Premium with the VMR9 video driver. I know it happens with .tivo and .mpg files; I think logging off and back on fixes it, but just closing and restarting VideoReDo TVS doesn't seem to.
Here is a snippet from the log, showing the last two files I attempted to open (one is .tivo and the other is .mpg):

Try switching to VMR7 to see if that works. If you're not using the Aero interface then going back to the DX should be just fine.

I'll try that. I was never sure why it picked VMR9 as the default, but every version of VideoReDo (both Plus and TVS) since I got Vista (I technically upgraded, but my system disk had died, so I installed fresh on a brand new hard drive) has defaulted to VMR9. I am in fact using Aero so I'll leave the DX alone.
I'm not currently on the computer that has VRD TVS so I'll have to get back later to tell you if that worked or not.

Well, now I have build 547. I forgot to change the video driver to VMR7 so until now, it was still VMR9, but once I got this error again, I remembered to change it. I tried again to open the video file after changing the driver and still got the error. For what it's worth, this time the file I'm having problems with is from my S2 TiVo and is therefore not HD (so it isn't limited to my S3 TiVo files, apparently). The thing that mystifies me the most is that the very same file I had just been working with gave me the error.
This log snippet starts from me successfully opening the file because I wasn't sure which parts were relevant. I opened the file, ran Ad-Detective, saved the project, selected a particular commercial I wanted to save and trimmed the unselected portion, saved the commercial as an .mpg, then tried to re-open the project and got the error. Changed the driver and again tried to re-open. Haven't tried restarting VRD TVS yet (that's my next step)--wanted to capture the sequence of things while it was still fresh in my mind.

Edited to add that I just restarted TVS and I still get the error on trying to open that project. I experimented with trying to open a different file (an already-edited .mpg) and also got the error, and changed my video driver to DirectX and still got the error (although I'm using Aero Glass, so at the very least it would have caused Glass to turn off temporarily had it worked). In my experience so far, once I get the error, nothing I've done except log off and back on has allowed anything to load.

Have you checked to be sure that your video drivers up to date? Also next time this happens try opening the exact same video you're trying to edit in Windows Media Player. It uses VMR for rendering as well, so if it is a video driver problem, or a VMR problem, then it will most likely fail as well.

I will try that, thanks.
I did check my video drivers. There *is* a newer one, but none of the fixes listed apply to me (they're either for the DirectX 10 cards or for SLI mode; my card is a single DirectX 9 card). I hesitate to update my video drivers without good cause because it always messes up my very carefully arranged desktop layout. Also, I've noticed that sometimes the newer nVidia drivers *break* things that previously worked, especially in Vista.
I can try the newest driver if you think it will help, but let me check what happens with Windows Media Player first.

Okay, got the error again. Played the same file with Windows Media Player with no problem.
The file that failed was one I had opened in VideoReDo TVS when I first started it up today; I marked all the cuts and added the project to the DVD list, then saved the DVD project. At that point, I shut down TVS to replace the DVD burner component and rebooted the computer. Then I opened a 2nd file in TVS, made cuts, and saved that project to the DVD list and resaved the DVD project (overwriting the file). Then I went to the DVD list and selected the first project, which should be the file *and* its cuts, and that's when it failed to open with the error. (And now that I've gotten the error, nothing will open successfully in TVS.)
So if the file played fine in WMP, I guess it's not the drivers or VMR. What do I try next? (I suppose this is complicated by my trying to solve the burning problem at the same time.)
I believe the problem is another application not the driver. On the Tools>Options>Playback page, try toggling the YUV acceleration mode. YUV acceleration is always enabled for HD files so this will only affect SD material.
But, I think the real problem is some other application that is prevent TVS from obtaining access to the display. Could there be something else running in the background?

On my computers, there are always several things running in the background. I can try shutting them off (or not starting them) one at a time until I find the culprit. But there isn't anything *new*, that I can think of, that wasn't running back when it worked.
Actually, come to think of it, my BOINC application has been upgraded once or twice recently, and its graphics now work, where they didn't before. So maybe the screensaver graphics of BOINC (software for distributed computing--mine runs Seti@home and Einstein@home), now that they work, are competing for video resources. I'll test that one first, I guess. Most of the other stuff that runs in the background is security-related (antivirus, antispyware, registry change notifier, that sort of thing).

hallo, i have just registered. i have installed a 15-day trialversion of videredo yesterday and it worked perfectly. i was very happy with the easy-to-use cut-software. but today, when i try to open the same files as yesterday, which has worked without problems, i always get the same warnings as mentioned above in the thread.
i am using vista premium and wanted to open rec-, ts- and mpeg-files, but it didn't work. can anybody help me?
i have already uninstalled and then reinstalled the software, but with no effect. i have taken some screenshots of the warning-box, but i am from austria and most of the text is in german.

i have not changed anything since yesterday so i have no explanation for it. i hope someone has any idea.
From the log file, here is the error message, perhaps you can translate the German for us:Error initializing video: VMR9 Error, BuildVideoMixingGraph9 (Windowed), hr=0x80040217, Es wurden keine Zwischenfilter für die Herstellung der Verbindung gefunden. , Overlay Flag: 0, Accel Flag: 1
A VMR9 error usually means that another application has a lock on the graphics display and isn't permitting another application access. Might know more from the translation. But in the meantime I would check the system for other applications including background screen savers.
Are you using the Aero interface? If not, you can switch VideoReDo to the DirectX mode (Tools>Options>Devices) which might help.

Thanks for the answer. i am using aero and there is no other "programm" running in the background, which wasn't there yesterday.
Translation: No (between-??)Filters (there is no translation for that word and i have never heard it in german before) were found for connection-establishing.
I don't even understand this in German:confused: .

thanks for the help.
Something changed in the video setup between yesterday and today. Perhaps different resolutions, mulltiple monitors, or another application which might have been present, but wasn't actually active.
Try the other driver options on the Tools>Options>Device page and see what happens.

For what it's worth, I think I tracked my problem down, so maybe this'll help you. I run BOINC (a grid computing app) with 2 projects, Seti@home and Einstein@home. There are screen savers associated with both. I was hypothesizing that the screen saver was interacting badly with TVS, although I hadn't tested.
A quick test just now seems to confirm that; I hadn't started BOINC at all while working in TVS the past couple days, so I went ahead and started it. TVS loaded a video fine at first, but the screen saver hadn't kicked in yet. So I went to the screen saver page and clicked "Preview" to manually start it, then tried to load a video in TVS again, and sure enough, there was the error.
If you're not using something like BOINC, check out whatever screen saver you're using. I haven't tested this with built-in Windows screen savers yet. Since you also seem to be running Vista, it could be an issue with screen savers that were meant for older versions of Windows, too.
I hope this at least gives you some ideas to pursue if it doesn't pinpoint the problem.
Oh, and logging off and back on fixes it for me, if you don't want to try rebooting.

Logging off and back on doesn't help. I donot use any screensaver. I had a built-in Windows screen saver, but i turned it off a few month ago.
I have no BOINC on my system.

Sorry to hear. Hopefully, someone else will have a better idea of what to try.
Also, I have since tested the built-in Windows screen savers, and they don't seem to cause the problem for me, so in my case, it was specifically the BOINC screensavers.
If you're not using *any* screensavers, the only thing I can think of is that maybe you're using some other program that draws the screen in a non-Vista way, and from then on, Windows considers that program to still have some sort of control over the screen even after it's closed. But that is just a guess.

I'm not sure if this is still a problem -- if not maybe someone else with a similar problem will stumble upon this thread.
I had the exact same problem and fiddled around with quite a few things including uninstalling and reinstalling (but not rebooting ). I finally realized I had left a game running in the background that was monopolizing the video card. Once I shut down the game, everything worked just fine.
I'm guessing that there is something running on your machine that is monopolizing the graphics card. Try looking through the processes listed in the Task Manager, maybe something will stand out.
