View Full Version : DVD will not play in standalone player

I took up the "early birds" offer and upgraded from VRD to VRD TVSuite. As far as editing recorded TV shows goes, it works perfectly for me (just like its predecessor).
I decided that it was time to try the DVD features and this is where I am having problems.
After I remove the unwanted content from the recording I use the DVD Men item to "add this project to the DVD Title list". I repeat this with a second recording and then click on create DVD.
Everything seems to go perfectly, both episodes play perfectly in powerdvd on my computer but the dvd won't play in either of my standalone dvd players. The first episode starts, goes for about 2 seconds then freezes.
I have updated to the latest beta but still the same result.
Any suggestions as to why the created dvd won't play?
cheers
Try importing one of the title from the DVD back into VideoReDo.
Press Ctrl+L to list the properties and paste the info here.

Next time you create a DVD try authoring it to a folder then using something else like Nero or ImgBurn to actually burn the DVD. That will help use determin if it's the authoring process or the DVD burner causing the issue.

FWIW: I didn't see where the OP said if these videos were standard or if TVS was told to ignore non-standard. If they aren't standard, its possible some (usually older) DVD players just doesn't like them. Not likely, but worth eliminating as a possibility.

I should have mentioned that is what i always have done and did on these occasions. I authored to a folder and burned with ImgBurn.

The original videos were recorded from a DVICO DualDigital TV Tuner in TS format using WebScheduler. I record in SD not HD.
When authoring the DVD I do not tick the box "Accept non-compliant DVD settings".
This usually results in a minor recode being necessary because of the Maximum GOP setting.

That produces an interesting point. The bitrate is shown as 9.608Mbps whereas on the original TS it shows as 10.000 Mbps and when I use VRD to remove the unwanted bits and save as an *.mpg the bitrate shows as 6.000 Mbps.

What happens if you only author one of the videos to the disk? Does it still freeze?
How about if you cut 20MB off of the file (using trim and copy), then author just the short file?

From your original post, I get the impression that you've edited and authored recordings to DVD before? If you try authoring & burning these recordings using your old method(s), does the DVD play OK in your players or does it still have problems?
Just trying to determine whether it's a problem with VRD TVS or a hardware or a system or a Windows config problem. (e.g. A dying DVD burner, a background process hogging CPU/hard drive/memory, or Windows running DVD burner in PIO mode rather than DMA) If the disk is authored by the 'old' method and still has problems then it's probably not VRD's fault.

i already did that. It was the only way we could get to watch them on our TV.
In the past I have always edited my TV recordings with VRD plus and then authored the resulting *.mpg files using Tsunami MPEG DVD Author Pro. I have never had a problem.
I edited these recordings with VRD TVSuite and then authored them with Tsunami MPEG DVD Author Pro and they played fine in the dvd players.
Obviously there is nothing wrong with the way VRD TVSuite edits my TS files but my standalone DVD Players (2) don't like the way it authors dvds. Whether it's a setting or not I have no idea. I had never used the dvd authoring previously and so far from 4 attempts I haven't had any success.
Not sure if it's relevant or not but with TV shows that i edit, author to dvd and watch then erase, I never create any dvd menu.

Do me a favor... Cut off a very short segment of the program in question (20-30 seconds) and author it to a DVD Folder using both TVSuite and the TVSuite/Tsunami combo method. Then take both folders and upload them to our FTP...

I'd like to see if there are any difference between the IFO files or the muxing in the VOB files.
Thanks,

Hi Dan,
uploading to a folder "THE_RAT now.
cheers
EDIT- Dan for some reason I was able to upload both VTS_01_1.VOB files but as each one completed I got an error "Quota exceeded, the file won't be saved".
Not sure how I am supposed to upload those files for you. All the *.BUP and *.IFO are there

I've contacted Pat about the FTP. For now I'll look at the IFO files and see if they have any differences which would cause a problem.
Dan
How large are the VOB files that you're attempting to upload?

they were 25mb each. Each clip was 30 seconds. I've made 2 x 20 second clips now and they are only 15mb each

Maybe your standalone players can't handle RW media. Have you tried plain +R or -R?

Maybe your standalone players can't handle RW media.I don't know, therat said it worked before.
btw, going to videohelp.com (http://www.videohelp.com/dvdplayers) will allow you to check player/media compatibility.

I've always used RW disks for TV shows on both players with no problems.
I think we may have found a burning issue when you have a DVD without menus. Can you create a DVD with a menu and see if that makes a difference? Another way to test if its a burning issue is to burn a disc from the VIDEO_TS folder created by TVS.

Hi Dan,
I always burn my disks from the the VIDEO_TS folder using ImgBurn in Build mode.
I'll try making a DVD again but with a menu and report back.

I tried creating a menu one which displayed the menu first and one that just auto-played the video. Neither worked. The menu displayed but the video froze after a second or two.

I've just made a few minor adjustments to the authoring process which might help increase compatibility with your player. They should be in the next release.
Just to be sure you are playing this DVD on a player which supports PAL right?
