View Full Version : Edited dvr-ms files give incorrect DVD size estimate ...

I record movies off DVB-T and they are saved as .dvr-ms files. I then use ComSkip to find the commercials and to create the "cut-points" in a .VPrj file.

If I open VRD with that project file (working on the original .dvr-ms file) and add it to the DVD, and it is larger than the capacity of a single layer DVD (4.3GB), when I click on "Create DVD", the finished size is shown as 0.08 GB - when it should be something like 5.52GB. If I continue at this point, the finished DVD will be larger than will fit on a single layer DVD as re-encoding has not been enabled by VRD.

However, if I first save the project as a .mpg file and then add the resulting .mpg file to the DVD, VRD will correctly estimate the size of the finished DVD and thus re-encode it to fit on a single layer DVD.

It seems that VRD is unable to correctly estimate the finshed size of a DVD made from a .dvr-ms file with edits included?

This problem has existed for the last few beta versions - I am currently using VideoReDo TVSuite - 3.1.5.552

Please let me know if you need further information (log files, etc)?

There's no issue that we know of with DVR-MS and size estimation. I believe the problem is related to the COMSkip project files as they don't have the size information in them. Send a COM skip project file to us at support @ videoredo.com and we can check it out. Mention topic=6119 in the subject.

I believe the problem is related to the COMSkip project files as they don't have the size information in them.

I have already eliminated the ComSkip project file as a possible cause.

If I use the ComSkip project file as a guide, and manually enter the cutpoints with the dvr-ms file open in VRD and then click "Add Title to DVD" and then "Create DVD", I get the "Estimated DVD size" of 0.08GB.

However, I have just discovered that if I save the project file that I created in VRD, close VRD and then re-open VRD with that project file, I get the correct value for the "Estimated DVD size" ....

So, it looks like VRD gets the "Estimated DVD size" wrong when I go immediately from creating the cut-points to creating the DVD, but gets it right if I save the project file and then re-open VRD with that project file ... I hope that makes sense ...

Seriously, I really thought we had this one fixed. Are you running in cut or scene mode? If Scene mode, see if cut mode behaves differently as I believe we only tested the DVR-MS sizing in cut mode.

Is your file, SD or HD, or simply do a Tools>Show Program Info and paste the results here.

I am using VRD in "cut mode".

It is SD (PAL 720x576)

File Name: D:\Videos\TV Recordings\Ten_Billy Elliot - M_200802032100p5514.dvr-ms
File Size: 8781872555 ( 8.18 GB )
Program Duration: 02:34:45.00
File Type: DVR-MS
Encoding: MPEG 2
Video stream Id: xE0
Encoding Dimensions: 720 x 576
Display Size: 720 x 576
Aspect Ratio: 16/9
Frame Rate: 25.00 FPS
Bit Rate: 10.000 Mbps
VBV_Buffer: 154 KB
Profile: Main/Main

Chroma: 4:2:0
Audio Format: 2.0
Audio Stream Id: Raw PS1
Audio Bit Rate: 256 Kbps
Audio Sampling Rate: 48000 Hz

The "Estimated DVD size" problem is actually worse than I described above - I have just upgraded to v3.1.4.553 and when I edited the above dvr-ms file, added it to the DVD and clicked on "Create DVD", the "Estimated DVD size" was shown as 4.21GB and no major recode was necessary. However, when VRD finished making the DVD files, the size is actually 5.78GB, which won't fit on a single layer DVD.

But now, when I open that same project, the "Estimated DVD size" is back to the old 0.08GB ...

However, if I use VRD to save the above dvr-ms file (and applying the edits) as an mpeg file, then use VRD to make a DVD with the resulting mpeg file, VRD gets the "Estimated DVD size" correct ... and that is my workaround at present.

It looks like this issue has something to do with the fact that the dvr-ms file contains edits - if I launch VRD with the unedited dvr-ms file and then create a DVD with that file (no edits), the estimated DVD size always seems to be correct.

However, if I launch VRD with the associated project file (which contains all the cut points), then the estimated DVD size goes beserk ...

I have just tried beta 554 and this problem still exists - I assume that you are unable to reproduce this issue, or unable to find a fix for it?

Do you need any additional information from me?

We might. I'll ask Pat to work with you to re-create the problem here.

FWIW, I have the same problem. If I open a DVR-MS then make some cut edits to it, the DVD size comes up as 0.06gb. Saving as a project then reopening doesn't fix the issue.

If I edit an MPEG in a similar way, the DVD size is correct.

I have attempted to reproduce it here using V554 without success.

Could you record a short 1 minute segment and create a VPrj file that will reproduce the issue?

If you can, upload the files to us:
ftp://upload:upload@videoredo.net/

Create a folder with a unique name and place the file in it.

Send an email to Support@VideoReDo.com and let us know when it has been successfully uploaded.

Pat, that's going to be too slow. I captured a 40mb file but it doesn't really show the different sizes being displayed as it does with a gb-size file.

PM me your office address and I'll send you a DVD with a file on it.

I finally got your DVD. I can reproduce your issue.

Any word on this issue? I'm still having the same problem. A recent example was a movie of 2hr 9min. When I went to the DVD burn screen, it showed as 1.48gb (should have been about 6gb). I closed VRD, then reopened the VPRJ and it showed .08gb. This means I can't tell if it'll fit on a DVD-5 (or DVD-9) without a re-encode until after I have authored it to VIDEO_TS first (or saved it as an MPEG to see how big it would turn out).
