View Full Version : dvr-ms navigation in videoredo slower than beyondtv (ts) navigation...

I recently decided to move from beyondtv/XP to MCE2005. I capture atsc with 2 tuners with a q6600/4gb ram, (3gb useable). After much configuration, I have gotten to the point where I am happy with MCE2005 more so than I was with beyondtv. Anyway, the only thing that I am still having problems with, is that, with mce2005's .dvr-ms created atsc video, when navigating the file in videoredo, it is about half as slow to respond, as videoredo is with beyondtv's .tp/.ts atsc video. I have tried changing the extension from dvr-ms to tp/ts, but it doesn't help. I have tried unchecking "double video buffer memory", it and makes no difference. After I run a file through videoredo, and convert it to ts, that file navigates just fine. Is there anything I can do to speed up the videoredo navigation responsiveness with dvr-ms files? This is the only thing I am lacking before I might finally be in video bliss.
Try processing the file through QuickStream Fix first, then load your fixed file for editing. Tools>QuickStream Fix

Pat, thanks for the suggestion, but is there no setting or anything that can help? I record lots, and to run every file through quickstream would be a huge task in itself.
I have no idea why this might be happening. For seeking with all files but DVRMS, VideoReDo uses its own logic. With DVRMS we actually call a function provided by Microsoft to position.
Two things. First off, I'll ask your DVR-MS consultant about it. Maybe he knows something. If that doesn't work, then we can try sending you an "instrumented" version of TVSuite that will dump some of what's happening internally within TVS.
A couple questions: (1) Which tuner device are you using? (2) While I don't want to get into the relative merits of BTV vs MCE, aren't you concerned about MCE's DRM issues.

Dan, the tuners are (1) ATI 650 pci, and (1) Avermedia M780 (pci-e). Both, I am really only using the atsc (ota). I don't use the analog, or cable/qam functions. I am a little bit worried about some "drm", that might pop up, but so far, I haven't seen anything to worry about, at least as far as using it for OTA broadcasts. I even recorded the Roy Orbison & Friends-Black & White Night, from PBS last night, which MCE "said" was "copy protected", but I didn't have any problems encoding it to divx, with Dr. Divx, and playing it back on older, stand alone players. (Of course, I ran it through videoredo first, to remove some of the pbs money raising segments, and it went through fine there too, other then the navigation "lag" I am having.) I know broadcasters "can" flag if they want to, but I didn't think any of them were really using it yet, and I didn't think it would matter what I was using, be it MCE2005, or beyondtv, if they did? Just to emphasize, this is mce2005 i'm using...not "Vista MCE". Are there any "drm" differences between the two? Thanks.
Can you record a 1-5 minute file that will reproduce this issue and upload it to us?
Confirm that the file has the same problem before uploading.

Create a folder with a unique name and place the file in it.
Send an email to Support@VideoReDo.com and let us know when it has been successfully uploaded.

I am uploading now. The folder I am putting them in, is "Navigation Lag-Reference 6332". I am uploading 2 for you. The first, is the actual dvr-ms file, that has the navigation lag. The other, is a beyondtv .tp file, which the navigation works great, (for comparison). I have finished uploading the first dvr-ms file, and am working on the second beyondtv one. They are only about 3 minutes, and one thing I did notice, when testing the dvr-ms one to see if it had the "problem", is, that it does have the lag on the initial navigation, but once you scan through it, (since it is a short clip), I (guess) the ram is holding enough of it to act more like I am used to. That wouldn't be a factor however on a "real" 30 minute or longer recording. I guess i'll send an email when the beyondtv clip is uploaded, as well. By the way, the clips are from the same program, just local ota, and they broadcast in 1080i. Thanks for helping.
