View Full Version : Tivo HD -> videoredo -> premiere problem

I have a .tivo that is 1280 x 720. I used videoredo quick stream fix to convert to .mpg, then import the mpg into premiere pro 1.5.
Something odd happens here: premiere says the video rate is 50.9 or something equally silly when it should be 59.941 (NTSC progressive). When the video plays on the timeline, it stutters every few seconds although the audio is still in sync.
The reason I put it into premiere is because the original video is an SD 4:3 video with borders added and broadcast in wide screen in a digital channel. The original content only occupies the middle of the screen. I use premiere to shrink the video so the area of interest fits into 720 x 480. I then export the movie as avi.
This avi also plays with stutters. I believe some frames are skipped. The original .tivo plays in videoredo with less stutters.
The original SD is interlaced and is made into progressive when broadcast. I also have the SD version, but it is 528 x 480 stretch to 720 x 480 by me.
Has anyone encounted similar problem? What is the correct way to take a 1280 x 720 progressive tivo video with a SD interlaced video embedded in the middle, and turn it into a SD interlaced DVD?
I'm using a core2 duo e4300 1.8GHz with 2G ram. However, I'm pretty sure the stutters in the .avi has nothing to do with CPU speed.

VidoReDo TVS has a cropping feature when you output to DVD--why don't you try that?
Thanks. I just did and it worked almost perfect. The only problem is the original video is interlaced but is broadcast as a progressive 720p. I can see flickering/ghost in fast moving areas.
When I output to DVD, how does videoredo convert the 59.94 hz progressive video into interlaced one? Whatever it does, it does not work in this case. I wish there are some options to tweak.
That is another reason I was trying to import the video into premiere. It allows me to tweak interlace.
In short, videoredo -> DVD is almost perfect, but could someone tell me why exporting into mpg, then importing into premiere results in not so perfect video (stutters eratically)?

For 59.94 FPS, 720p material we decode all frames and then drop alternate ones. This worked extremely well in our testing, but if it turns out we need to weave, or offer a weave option, that wouldn't be difficult to do. That's why I would like to see what you're seeing.

Is this still an open issue? I have this problem with a different Video Editor (more of a consumer level)... and the stuttering carries over from preview into the produced DVD material. However, the displayed movie in VideoReDo is perfect.
I'm technical, but not video-editing-technical, if there are some steps you want to me take then I could help.
It could be a problem with Permiere not properly honoring the repeat frame flags that might in the progressive video. These repeat frame flags are rarely used in pro-sumer video, but are quite common in TV shows.
Upload a short clip, we be glad to look at it.
Just a guess on my part.

I posted a reply with a link to a sample video, but for some reason the message needs approved.... this is a test to see if this message needs approved as well. :)

I am uploading a short 60 second HD clip now... it is in on your FTP site in a sub-folder named "EvanRon_Sample_HD_Clip".
I created it by taking my original Tivo HD video file and setting a single start/end point for 60 seconds worth of video that highlights an issue. I saved the clip with default options ("No Change").
The HD clip always plays fully and correctly in VideoReDo and in WMP.
However when bringing the clip into a video editor (in my case PD 7) the preview playback and editing stutters very much. And in fact, this stuttering is literally copied over into any produced output (file or DVD). I've tested my software in Vista 32 and Vista 64 bit.
Please let me know what you think as I do not know if this is a VideoReDo issue or if I should circle back with the other company with details.
Here are a couple of more observations: The clip starts out with some big blue graphics and this always plays correctly. After the graphics the movie fanfare begins and immediately at this point in the video editing playback the display begins to stutter (although typically audio is fine).
Cheers,
Evan

I'm not sure I understand this reply? My previous post explained I uploaded an mpeg to your ftp site.
