View Full Version : Enable Fast MPEG Encoder Manual Option

While I was browsing through some of the posts, I found a reference to a "Tools>Shift>Options", so (being the curious type), I tried it and was presented with a number of Manual Options - pretty cool!

Now my question (BTW, I am using Beta Build 565):

Option #43 "Enable Fast MPEG Encoder" has a default setting of "False". This may seem superfluous, but what are the up/down sides to setting this to true? VRD TV Suite seems to encode fairly quickly now. Is this only for DVD building? I use VRD TV Suite mostly for cutting commercials out of recorded TV broadcasts.

Anyway, just curious. I have been using VRD products since 2005 and have upgraded everytime a new release became available (I started with VRD Classic). Dan and his group are the GREATEST! Great product - Great Support - Works as advertised!

Any ideas or input with regard to my question?

Has anyone tried this functionality or was my post unclear?

Thanks

The fast encoder should work well in most situations so its worth a try. We had some early issues with it and GOP size reductions, but I think that too has been corrected. The fast encoder is primarily used when recoding DVD and MPEGs and works great in those situations.

Is there a specific encoder that is used by VRDTVSuite/VRDPlus or is it proprietary?

Thanks for your prompt reply.

It is proprietary to VideoReDo.

We do not use system codecs.

Just checking to see if there are any negatives with using the fast mpeg encoder option (reduced quality in recoding?). I'm using HD tivo files and creating DVDs.

There should not be any issues.

You should create a sample using both methods and perform a side by side comparison on the same equipment for your own reference.

When a complete recoding is called for, such as converting from HD to SD, the fast encoder option is always used. The fast encoder settting is only checked with doing GOP reduction or smart encoding.

For best results select the 2 pass encoding as this will optimize the bit allocation to where its needed.
