View Full Version : Chapter points
It would be good to also have VRD create a chapter point notation while editing. This way, people would not have to review the edited video for further creation of chapter points.
Since F3 is Mark-in and F4 is Mark-out, I would suggest something like F5 (or F2) for "Chapter Point".
Display could look something like this.

Also a simple text notation in sequential order in the Project file at the appropriate places with the cut points.
e.g.
<Version>1
<Filename>F:\s 110 SF10 040120.mpg
<MPEG Stream Type>2
<Duration>35976072778
<SyncAdjustment>0
<Cut 0>0:433100777 00:00:00.00, 00:03:12.71, 00:00:00.00
<Chapter> 00:06:00.00
<Cut 1>3291299888:5798480444 00:14:19.31, 00:17:09.10, 00:14:19.31
Pat, The whole chapter issue will be addressed in a future release. I know you want something now, but I think its of limited utility until we get our own DVD authoring or can interface closely to a 3rd party product.
Pat, Did you see the request on the SHS forum about splitting output into seperate files http://www.shspvr.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=24728#24728.
Seems like a good idea to me, especially for SVCD. Would be trivial to add to VRD.
Son of a gun.
Separate clips output. Boy, that sounds like an idea I had mentioned several weeks ago.
And the sequential file naming for the separate file output. Boy that sounds familiar.
And the idea of padding the file with black frames (Say to create GOP accurate files for importing into neoDVD.) That sounds vaguely familiar also.
I guess I'm just a man ahead of my time. or is that a legend in my own mind. ;-)
What I would suggest, based upon the request and to fulfill everyone's needs is this. Split these selections in the options panel:
1) Option to pad and quantity of GOPs to pad. e.g. complete the GOP, and 1,2,3,or 4 extra GOPs allowing up to 2 seconds total to address the SVCD issue as well as neoDVD.
2) Suboption to 1) Pad the each clip beginning, end, or both.
3) Output as 1 file or separate clips with sequential numbering on clip name.
(And I guess we could throw in [F5} chapter point while we're at it. ;-) )
Pat, I just didn't get it until today, my fault. Splitting the files is easy. I will need to know is if the internal time stamps should be reset at each split. I'm guessing yes, but its easy to check out.
You think the padding should be in GOPs? I was thinking seconds, with 1 second resolution. Doesn't make much difference to me, could even be # of frames if you wish.
I don't understand this comment about neoDVD and padding. How does padding affect NeoDVD?
On the F5, why not. Since we will be creating SVCD chapters I guess we will need chapter markers.
Padding in quantities of GOP solves 2 things.
1. Black space for the SVCD.
2. neoDVD wanted files in terms of GOP not frame accurate cuts
When I cut in frame accurate mode, neoDVD didn't like it. When I cut GOP accurate, neoDVD accepted the files no problem. If I can pad the beginning and end of each clip to a full GOP after FA cutting, it may allow the importation of the files into neoDVD and allow DVD creation there.
e.g. If I cut the beginning on frame 7, add black frames 1-6 to the beginning of the clip. If I cut the end at frame 9, add black frames 9-15 at the end.
Since GOPs are 1/2 second each, allowing additional padding of 1,2,3, and 4 GOPs on each end of of a clip would enable padding of 1/2, 1, 1 1/2, and 2 seconds solving the SVCD chapter issue also.
So essentially killing 2 birds with one stone by expressing in terms of GOPs rather than seconds.
Adding full VRD GOPs at the beginning of a segment will probably not solve the problem with neoDVD. VRD will still output a shortened GOP with the actual program material. There are a number of reasons why this is important, not the least of which is that the picture quality will suffer a bit around the cut point. Adding black frames at the end is much easier to do.

Just want to say that because of the smooth "finding" power of VRdo, in combination with the audio scrub, it would indeed be nice to be able to create a chapterpointlist. The format of such a thing wouldn't necessary have to be complex to be used in for example DVDLab. I created such a list myself in just a format like:
00:02:30
00:04:21
00:10:45
Even IF you needed a complexer format it would be very easy to convert a list like the one above with notepad or the like. Of course, DVDlab should be able to audioscrub. And of course, you may jot down the numbers out of VRdo yourself
We had hoped to have this feature implemented by now, but, there have been postponed for other more pressing issues. However, don't worry, we will be pursuing this capability.
Gerard,
If you do cuts with VRD and save the project file, open the .VPrj file in Notepad. The last set of numbers in each line is the time of the cut in the outputted file which is what I am using as the chapter points for authoring DVDs. It may be of help to you.

If you are creating chapter points I hope you will make them work in Sony DVD Architect as well. It is a wonderful tool.
