View Full Version : Compression Errors after using VideoReDo

Hi

I have started to trial the VideoReDo software and am delighted to say it has been very easy to use and works very well. I am a DVRecord user and have been trying to compress the resultant video using the program (which uses VirtualDub to compress to DivX 5), but it keeps crashing with the error report: Failed (Compress). "Error decoding MPEG audio frame 12474 (4:59): incomplete frame"

This same type of error seems to occur on each of the videos once it has been passed through VideoReDo.

Does anyone know why this might occur, or any better way of compressing the mpeg-2 files to divx or something similar?

Thanks

That's a strange error especially since VideReDo doesn't have the capability of re-encoding MPEG audio yet. Here are some things to look at first:

1) Are you using the latest version 1.5.5.-221? If not, you should update as there was an issue in prior releases with the last audio frame of a segment not being completely written.

2) You can also have VideoReDo check to make sure there aren't any audio frame errors in your file. To do this, open the file and make sure the entire navigation bar is green. Then save it. On the Output Complete dialog you'll see the processing statistics. If there are any audio frame sync errors then they will be reported. (This info is also in the log file).

If none of the above works, let me know and I'll try and duplicate your problem.

I have been using various incarnations of VideoReDo for a number of months, and have just had this problem occur. I am not sure if it is a problem with VRD. I suspect more likely it is a problem with the source.

Dan, I have uploaded a section of the file that exhibits the error. See sesame-short.mpg in the uploads area.

The file was a DVB-T broadcast that was trimmed down with VRD/QE v1.7.0-320. During the trim process VRD reported no errors. A QSfix does not help either.

When using Virtualdub-MPEG2 v.1.5.10 bld 18294 (the latest as at this date), with Full Processing on the Audio and Video stream, virtualdub spits the following error on this file:
Error decoding MPEG audio frame 106 (0:02): incomplete frame.

Perhaps there is an error in the file that a future tweak of VRD might be able tof fix? :-)

Cheers,
JC

There don't appear to by any bad audio frames in the file. I check the all the error codes returned by our audio decoder and nothing came up. There is a "blip" in the audio stream. You can hear it as well as see it in the Thumbnail view. But again, that appears to be valid.

Our summer release will have a resolution for this issue in that you'll be able to re-encode the audio stream and that will make sure that any bad audio frames are removed and recoded.

Here's a successful workaround for this problem:

1. Take the MPG file that VideoReDo has produced and open it with TMPGEnc Xpress 3 (http://www.pegasys-inc.com/en/product/te3xp.html).

I am sure there are a number of other programs that will let you demultiplex the stream, but in this case we need one that will turn the audio stream into a wav file, and fix/overlook the busted mp2 frame.

2. Work through TMPGEnc Xpress and when you go to Set Output, choose the Wave Output profile at the end of the template list, instead of one of the movie formats as you would otherwise.

3. TMPGEnc Xpress will save the MPG audio track as a wav file and seems to know how to handle the frame errors that are making VirtualDub choke.

4. Now use the wav file as usual with VirtualDub i.e:
a. Open VirtualDub
b. Open the MPG file with the broken audio track
c. Choose Audio - Wav Audio ... and load the wav file you just created
d. Set video compression properties and audio compression properties, and create your avi file.

I can't imagine how getting the audio track this way is going to give you audio that is any worse than what VirtualDub would have given if it had done a direct MP2 to MP3 conversion.

This solution of course requires TMPGEnc Xpress. I would love to know if anyone found a different, free, piece of software that could happily demultiplex the mp2 track, convert it to a WAV or CBR MP3 file, and repair (or overlook) the busted audio frame.

Hope this helps someone.

Cheers,
JC

Here's something for you to try.

Download and install Audacity (free)

Load your MPG file into VideoReDo and save as Elementary Streams.

Start Audacity and load the MPA file from VideoReDo.

Export as WAV file.

Just encountered another file with a busted audio frame. I tried saving as Elementary Streams. That part of the process worked fine, but when I opened the MPA file in Audacity, it hung on the broken frame.

TMPGEnc Express was able to process the mpg file and output a wav file, which I could subsequently use in VirtualDub.

So at this stage, TMPGEnc Express still seems to be the best, if not the only, solution.

Resurrecting an old thread - almost 3 years since last post!

I am using latest VRD - 2.5.6.512 - Jun 15 2007

When using Virtualdub to XVid compress files that have been edited and/or QSF'd with VRD, I still regularly (like around once per month) get Incomplete Frame errors on the file.

All files have been recorded off Australian DVB-T using a Nebula Electronics DigiTV card.

Is anyone else getting this? Do you want some more samples?

Cheers,
JC
