Windows Media Player Compatibility

I have created edited mpegs from mpegs that play on WMP without problems. The edited mgegs however have an audio problem. The picture is fine but the audio is choppy and drops out.

The edited mpegs play just fine in VideoReDo so I know the audio is there. Any ideas as to how to fix them so that they play on WMP.

My computer 3GHz with 1Gig memory so I don't think that is the issue. It could be a codec issue. Is there one you would recommend (and where could I get it)

WMP problems playing of MPEG videos are the toughest to solve since when it comes to MPEG2, WMP is just a shell around which ever codecs you might happen to have installed on your system.

First off, what are the audio characteristics of your program: VideoReDo's Tools>Show Program Info.

Where did your original MPEGs come from?

Then, load the file into WMP and click on File properties. This will tell us which codecs are being used to play back the file. Also which version of WMP are you using?

Finally, do you have any other MPEG players on your system? Perhaps WinDVD or PowerDVD?

Here is what happened. I "forgot" I installed Sonic MyDVD around the same time. It installed a codec that caused the audio problem in WMP with files edited through Video Redo -- Even though they played fine in VideoReDo. Anyway I uninstalled the MyDVD installed Cineplayer. Then the files would play only audio in WMP. I found and downloaded the K-Lite codec pack and installed the codec for MPEG2 files. Then WMP played the files fine. Of course MyDVD no longer worked -- I could not create DVDs from the VideoRedo edited files. I then reinstalled MyDVD. Somehow after the reinstall, MyDVD uses its codec and works with VideoRedo. WMP continues to use the codec from K-Lite and works. VideoRedo as always works GREAT.

Anyway I post this so that someone else might be able to figure it out as well.

b) how you set it to use a particular codec

To learn about this, google: wmp codec priority or directshow codec priority.

A codec is made up of a set of directshow filters (see the graphedit utilitym, there might be a version on our FTP site). Filters do specific tasks, like demux mpeg2, decode audio, decode video, display video, play audio, etc. Each filter has a priority and when two or more do the same task a complex algorithm comes into play to automatically decide which ones to go with. AFAIK, you can't set the priorities for WMP usage. Other players, like Zoom for example, can. In fact, many eons ago, VideoReDo supported directshow codecs and we had a mechanism for choosing which codecs to use.
