Bad DVR-MS files with Vista Media Center
This question isn't directly related to VideoReDo, but VRD does fix the problem, so I'm hoping your expertise will help me pin down a cause.
About 40% of the DVR-MS files I record with Vista Media Center are corrupted. They will play for 15-20 seconds and then start to hang, bumping ahead just a few frames at a time every five seconds or so. But converting the files to mpgs with VRD fixes them, and they play just fine from beginning to end.
I defrag my hard drives, including the 2TB external drive where I record and store most of my video, and tweaked as many settings as I could find for higher performance, but the problem still occurs. My guess is that another process is going on when some of the recordings start, and that's using up resources and damaging some data unique to the DVR-MS file that the conversion to mpg is stripping out. Is this possible? Has anyone else seen this problem and can shed any light on it? Thanks.
HP dv9640us laptop
4GB G.Skill RAM (upgrade from 2GB didn't fix it)
2TB WD MyBook Mirror edition
Vista Home Premium (32-bit and with an upgrade to 64-bit on same laptop, same problem)
