4K h265 support?

Is there any support for 4K H265 in VRD TVSuite or Pro? Trying to edit below file in VRD5 and it won't even open it.

HEVC support is coming in V6. However, it would be interesting to see if your file plays in V6 as it's 10 bit with BT.2020 color. Where did this file come from? Would appreciate if you could upload it for us to check out.

I hope bt.2020 HDR colour support is also coming in v6 ... home cameras seemingly are coming out with those features now and more stuff on the net is appearing with HDR (HDR is FANTASTIC).
(ffmpeg and nvencc can produce 10-bit HDR colour .mp4 files).

This was captured from the NBC 4K Olympic backhaul on satellite ;) Looks gorgeous!

where would you like me to upload a portion of the file?

Edit: I see the sticky to upload files, threw up 300mb chunk there. (Your files have been uploaded to the folder '36456_3') Let me know if you need more. for playback on PC, I use MadVR to render the HDR.

PS: If I can make a request: v6 *needs* to include h.264 4:2:2 support. almost all freeware decoders/encoders support h264 4:2:2 these days. no reason for it to be 'exclusive' to Pro anymore ;) Thanks!

Thanks for the file. It opens OK in V6 and I've added it to our collection of test samples. Do you have any HEVC 4:2:2 files?

I looked up MadVR, and it looks like a DirectShow plugin but hasn't been updated in years. Do you use with another player or does it have it's own player?

install MadVR then use MPC-HC for the actual playback. it uses MadVR for the HDR processing and I have it set to use LAV Video decoder for CUDA acceleration. ;)

I will check, but I don't believe there have been any HEVC 4:2:2 feeds yet.

I also have this one, this was a DirecTV backhaul for Brian Setzer Orchestra 4K concert. The bitrate on it is JUICY, want a sample?

Yes, upload this clip as well. Are you watching the HDR content on your PC monitor or on a TV?

PC for now. On my TV I can watch it, but just at 1080p (don't own a 4ktv yet!)

what's the max size your site can support? I assume you'll want more than a few seconds of Brian to test.

EDIT: Uploaded 1gb, roughly 1min45sec. Your files have been uploaded to the folder '36456'.

PS: if you want to throw a beta of v6 my way to test, I always have tons of odd satellite captures to test and can report findings! ;)

There's currently 20GB available on our upload site. Will check out the 1GB file, if you want to upload more that's fine. I have a 4K TV (2 in-fact, they aren't much more $ than 1080p), although they aren't HDR.

I'm waiting until I find a OLED 4K UHD with HDR and 3D at a reasonable price ;) hard to find ones with 3D. Plus my Samsung Plasma 55'' 3D still beats out any of that 'LED' crap they're selling these days.

I bought a cheapie samsung 4k/HDR TV which is why I'm interested,

I just googled and information about the actual recording codec is very scarce and seems to depend on whether recording at 4K or lower-with-HDR ... it's said to be h.264/AVC 10-bit mp4 :(

So I'll go and try out the camera modes and report back. I hope VRD does h.264/AVC/HDR !

Well, so much for that :( ... A Big time disappointment. I just bought a "Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus", which in video recording mentions an auto-HDR mode and a HDR-on mode for some of the video resolutions (the phone actually tells me no HDR for above 1080p) ...

So, I took a sample video with each resolution/mode, and as the attached results show ... the results are all .mp4/h.264 files with no HDR, zero, zilch, all 8-bit, every last spanking clip. At least that's what both mediainfo and ffprobe tell me.

View attachment Samsung-Galaxy-S8plus-Video-Codec-Summaries.zip

I googled around and it is difficult to find anything which alludes to the S8+ and recording formats let alone "HDR". Samsung's site says zilch about it.

I reckon I should have at least one 10-bit HDR clip because it tells me I have set it to HDR mode - I don't know what to think, am something wrong and/or am I being gypped ?

Secondarily, it says the videos are all VFR - I don't yet know what that means for playing these clips on various devices and if I need to convert them to a fixed framerate let alone how to to that conversion to a fixed framerate.

Advice welcomed.

Per the videohelp forum asking the same question https://forum.videohelp.com/threads/388221-Seeking-advice-on-videos-from-Samsung-S8-no-HDR

For the unwary ... "HDR" in video recording on the S8/S8+ phone cameras is just a marketing term for playing with colours somehow in phone software, not HDR10 10bit or anything like that.

ALL videos recorded by on the S8/S9+ cameras are only h.264 8-bit progressive VFR .mp4s in various resolutions and colour spaces and profile levels as outlined in the spreadsheet attached above.

Can anyone confirm if VRD5 (or 6) handles them all (especially VFR which confuses me at the moment) ?

V5 does not handle H265/HEVC, nor does it handle VFR well. VFR will play but when saving it may re-sync the audio, not always, depends on how variable the VFR is.

V6, when released,handles H265/HEVC 8 bit, 10-bit/HDR coming later. VFR is allowed.

I also updated to version 6 and was frustrated to see that it does not work with videos containing HDR.

I would like to ask you to add support for HDR, that can export to 10 bit and DTS audio and its variants (DTS-RA, DTS-HD, DTS-MA, etc.)
