Black out existing frame

I've searched the forums (though not thoroughly), but haven't seen this request. I've seen folks asking for a feature to add black frames, but what I'd like is to simply black out an existing frame. No need to resync the audio, as that would stay the same.

Reason? Sometimes I get a program where the audio for the program begins before the video of the commercial/promo has faded completely. It would be nice to black out (or white out) that lingering video, but keep the audio. Maybe even perform a "black out" to a selected range of frames.

Conversely, perhaps, it might be nice at times to keep a frame (or selected range of frames) of video while silencing the underlying audio. (That might not be as easy or straightforward. I don't know.)

Muting the audio is already possible.

Here is a procedure to selectively mute the volume on segments of your video:

You may find this process easier in Scene Mode where you only select the segment you wish to output. Tools>Options>General Parameters and select "Scene Mode" for Editing Mode.

Mark the first segment you would like to adjust the volume. This segment will be green with the rest of the timeline red. Adjust the volume of the segment (Tools>Adjust Audio) and add to the Joiner.

Clear the cutlist and select the next segment of the file you wish to adjust the audio level. This new segment will be green with the rest of the timeline red. Adjust the volume of the segment (Tools>Adjust Audio) and add to the Joiner.

Continue to add segments of the timeline and adjust the volume accordingly.

Clear the cut list each time and indicating the next sequential segment.

Output your file from the Joiner. Joiner>Create Video From Joiner List.

You didn't comment though Pat on "muting the VIDEO" which is where Don started. Is that being worked-on or at least "on the list"? I'm pretty sure it's been requested before but agree too w/MaestroDon that it's hard to search for here in the forum.

A variation of blanking the video which I would find useful is to freeze the current frame over a number of frames whilst leaving the audio alone.

This would allow covering up a glitch in a few video frames with much less disturbance than just deleting them.

That would be a cool feature to implement!

But I agree, the ability to insert a colour (eg black, whatever) across a sequence of frames would be cool too.

I do this all the time in my other job. I videotape the interviews for Movies101 [movies101.org]. On those single camera interviews, I have to change tapes at, approximately, every 40 minutes. It takes ca. 20 seconds to do so. The audio is also recorded onto DAT. When doing the edit, I freezeframe the last video over the continuing audio and do a 1 second dissolve to the returning video. Unless the viewer is paying very close attention, it's a seamless transition. I use Sony Vegas as the NLE.

I really need this feature -- i.e. the ability to black out or otherwise over-ride video frames without impacting the audio continuity - in Video Redo TV Suite. Even better would be the ability to freezeframe or select a frame snapshot, but just blacking out the video for a few frames would meet my needs.

Increasingly, TV programs start and end with (and sometimes in the middle) an overlay that really detracts from my enjoyment. I especially can't stand the promotions and recommendations -- often in a split screen -- for other programs to watch when I'm just savoring the program I just watched during the credits . Since the program music is playing, I can't just cut the annoying section or replace it with a blank segment without destroying the audio continuity.

The last post on this thread is from 13 years ago so perhaps the feature is implemented somewhere but I can't find it. The closest thing I can find is Fades, but those are only between Join segments, and Titles are always added frames without music.

I love VideoRedo TV Suiite's speed, precise editing, and maintenance of the original quality so I would hate to have resort to another video editor but without this feature I may have to.

I believe you can do it but it would be a mess...
To keep the audio safe, split the video and audio into separate files.
For the video you would have to add the segments you want to keep into the "joiner" and replace the non wanted segment with a black frames segment.
Make sure every thing is in the correct order in the "joiner" and save it off.
Mux the saved correct audio back into the video.

Thank you for the suggestions. I've tried doing something similar to what you describe and, as you indicate it's a mess.

Much simpler I've found has been to switch to another Video Editing program (an old version of Cyberlink PowerDirector) I own to do essentially what you describe -- keeping the audio track locked, while setting up clip Keyframes that black out (or crop) the unwanted video segments, and even copying/pasting freezeframes into a parallel video-only track to overlay the blacked out segments.

However, VideoRedo is so much more efficient/faster importing and exporting video that I was really hoping they could add this simple capability feature directly into the product.
