Closed captions?

I ripped one of my DVDs to MKV and it lost the closed captioning. I got it back in VLC by using ccextractor, but VRD will not display the captions.

Am I missing something? Does VideoReDo not have this capability?

Depends on the caption type. We support 608/708 captions, but NOT DVD subtitles.

Is there any way to convert the output from ccextractor to a compatible format (608/708?) ?

Or should I not rip to .mkv format...?

@Dougmeister, Having played the CC/subtitles game with VRD recently, I would just not expect VRD to deal with words.
(at least in this version; I haven't yet checked out v6)

I have done 2 things, both of which involve downloading the subtitles from other sites -- such as iSUBTITLES dot info -- so I don't have to do the MKVToolNix work (I don't remember why I didn't favor CCextractor):
  • have the downloaded SRT file sitting with the video (with the same name) and activating it within VLC during playback
  • have "sewn" the SRT file into the video file via Handbrake (mostly I do this when I edit the SRT and the audio to make recent Marvel movies consumable for the little guys)
Could those ideas work for you?

In VRD5 you have to turn on CC display...
View>"Display EIA 608 user data captions"...You will ONLY see this option if you have a file loaded or
have previously loaded a file. A fresh opening of VRD5 and you will NOT see the option.

Also VRD .mp4 files will have the CC(srt) file in them but I've found that ONLY VRD will display it.
So forced to extract to .srt file then no problem with VLC or MPClassic displaying the .srt subtitles.

VRD 5 does display CC(.srt).

@Dan203
VRD6 will NOT display MPG CC-(.srt text) even tho the option is there. (h264.MKV & h264.MP4 will display CC!)

I believe that srt support is only in Pro. We do support captions in MP4, whatever format those are, but internally they're just converted to 608 captions.
