Convert a TS file with teletext subtitles to a MKV or MP4 with embedded subtitles

Hi
Maybe a stupid question, but do I have a way with VideoReDo5 to convert a TS file (HD) that embeds teletext subtitles, to a MKV or MP4 H.264 file and to convert/keep those subtitles ?
When I try to convert to MKV, teletext subtitles are lost (probably because text subtitles are not supported by this container).
Thanks for your tips

Subtitles in VRD are currently pass through only. MKV does not support teletext so we have no way to output them. Adding better subtitle handling, including conversion, is something that's on our list. So it could show up in VRD eventually.

If you can extract the subtitles as a seperate file I would expect that
"Mkvmerge" would be able to insert the subtitle file into your .mkv container.

I ran a test with MKVMerge and it seems to convert teletext to SRT captions. So if you were to edit the file in VRD, save as TS, then use MKVMerge to convert to MKV it should retain the captions.

FYI the latest beta has support for DVB subtitles in MKV. In my tests the only player that can read them is MPC-HC, but as long as there is at least one available player that supports it then we feel comfortable including the feature. (apparently the linux DVR software tvheadend uses this format, so we just copied the way they do it)

Hi
After a quick test, mkvmerge (latest version 7.7.0) fails to convert my .TS (either the original as produced by my recorder, or after cutting it with VRD).
Sometimes it simply does not detect the video stream (and convert it to a .mka file) which is really strange, and sometimes conversion fails with error code -1073741819.

EDIT: if I uncheck the subtitles stream, no error -1073741819 anymore (but no subtitles in the target MKV of course)

Hmmm... I only tested it with one file and it worked OK there, but I'm not sure how robust their conversion it. Apparently not very. Sorry but until we change the subtitle support in VRD to allow for conversion you're going to have to either save to TS or live with the MKV files not having subtitles. MKV files do not support teletext captions directly, so there is no way to simply pass through the subtitles without conversion.

Hi Dan
Thanks for your feedback.
I finally found a solution. I purchased the TS-Doctor licence few years ago, a very great tool I often use in conjunction with VRD for my TS files.
TS-Doctor includes a "TS-Remuxer" feature: if I open my TS files in it, remuxer converts it to a MKV that embeds STR subtitles correctly (tested: working perfectly on my TV media player).
