Editing footage from DJI Mavic Mini Drone fails

This is my first post. Sorry if I mess anything up. OK....I've been using VRD since 2006. Purchased several "upgrade" licenses since, now running Ver 6. What gets me is that even after all these years using this program for simple trimming of videos, it's still VERY buggy. What's now got me pulling the last few hairs from my head is it's failure to render simple cuts using video taken from my new DJI Mavic Mini Drone! They are MP4 files. Two resolutions are available to shoot. Regular 1920x1080 and 2720x1530. Drone has NO microphone, so no audio. I CAN work with the regular full HD size ok. I can do nearly anything I want, including lowering the bitrate and generating a new clip just fine. BUT when I try the 2700x1500 size, full fail! All I have to do is simply try to render a simple cut from the source file and hit save, BOOM! The progression box shows up for like 700ms then gone! Program does NOT crash, just the progression box disappears. No error or anything. In the past, many files from other sources will crash VRD and the whole program just goes bye bye! Poof, gone! Very frustrating to say the least. I am NOT a video guru, ok? So, I am asking for suggestions as to what may be wrong here. 🧐

2720x1530 is a non-standard resolution. Resolution in H.264 and HEVC is required to be divisible by 8. 1530 is not divisible by 8 so I'm not sure how your drone is even encoding at that resolution. It could be using a trick similar to the one MPEG-2 uses for 1080. MPEG-2 requires the resolution to be divisible by 16 and 1080 is not, so for it to work properly it actually encodes at 1088 and uses a cropping rectangle to get rid of the extra 8 pixels. Maybe your drone is doing something similar, I'm not sure. But for 1080 we have to specifically hard code a fix to handle that special case. I never knew this resolution was even a thing so we don't have any special code for 1530.

Does this happen to be a Mavic Mini drone? I did a google search for that resolution and found a thread on their forum complaining about this issue and how this is an invalid resolution and is causing others issues. The thread is from last year, so maybe they have a firmware update that will fix it. You should check.

If not then send us an email at support AT videoredo.com and we might be able to get a sample from you and hard code a fix similar to the one we use for MPEG-2.

WOW and thankyou for the info! It is a Mavic Mini and running the latest firmware that i know of. Like I said, I'm not a video codec GURU, but when I saw that resolution size, I wondered the same thing...Not standard. The raw videos plays fine on my computer using popular players. I took one of the 2700 videos and ran it through Hand Brake to reduce the size down to standard 1920x1080, then brought it into VRD and performed a simple edit and it renderd fine! I don't see a huge difference between 2700 and 1920 even on my 4K monitor. That may be kind of a advertising gimmick. DJI makes drones that shoot in 4K. Hopefully they are using standard format!

If you're willing to upload a sample then shoot us an email and we can take a look. We might be able to throw it in there if it's a simple change.

P.S. I didn't even notice the name of the drone was in the title. Doh!
