The new "Select File" dialogue in VRD6 is vague. In Windows terminology a "File" is the formatted data that can be saved in a "Folder". The dialogue needs to be changed to read "Select Folder instead of "Select File". Can you fix it please?
You're selecting the output file, not the folder. The "new folder" and "recent folders" parts you underlined are there because, well "new folder" is part of the Windows File Explorer and is included automatically, and the "recent folders" is just a shortcut so you can navigate back to a recently used folder where you saved another file. But the ultimate goal of that dialog is to select the file you're saving to.
I know that whole dialog with the two levels isn't the greatest design, but Windows made some changes that made it impossible for us to customize a standard Save dialog with the features we wanted, so this was our best option. A lot of other programs have adopted the same approach. Or they use a two step save where they have you pick the file first then forward you to another dialog with additional options. Neither is ideal but it's all you can do when Windows limits your ability to customize the dialog.
Danr... "If you attempt to select a folder it will either not return or default a file name for you."
I have not experienced either of those scenarios. I have full freedom of folder choice, including making a new one on-the-fly and those folders I use are always recorded in the "Recent Folders" list for re-use. Perhaps I'm using an undocumented feature?
Dan203... "You're selecting the output file, not the folder."
Not in my case. The files I edit in VRD are already named so all I'm selecting in the save dialog windows is their final destination folder and the output profile. The two-level dialogue is an OK compromise, it's just the file vs folder terminology that seems wrong to me. Anyway, c'est la vie and thanks for the great software.
Jaydear, just so there isn't confusion. When you select a folder with from the "recent folders" list, create a new one, or choose a folder from the center of the dialog, you're still selecting an output file name, it's just being set to a default value and can be changed before you press the select button.
