Sortiing and Removing Duplicate wtv recordings. Bitrates; Resolution, etc.

Sorting through my recordings from free to air tv i find that i will have the same show from 2 different networks or channels. Aust free to air has a number of broadcasters; each with various different 'quality' channels multiplexed.

Can someone advise which of these would be a better quality to keep?

(the time length variation is the seven minutes of end credits the broadcaster did not display.)

So the first has a higher bit rate 720 x 576 with lower bit rate two channel audio.
Whereas the second has a (fairly) low bit rate 1440 x 1080, Ac3 5.1 surround audio

At first i would just go for the second as it is higher resolution and has the 5.1.
But the more i read i find that the low bit rate 1080i may look worse (quality) than the higher bit rate 576i.

So this gets me thinking of where the crossover point would be for where low bitrate vs resolution is?

Also should i choose to keep the first file (720 x 576). I found i can separate all elementary streams and remux the Ac3 5.1 to the first video stream. EXCEPT, this creates some terrible audio/vid sync misalignment due to the slightly different cuts around the add breaks etc.

Can then a program like audacity be used to edit the ac3 audio stream to add / remove the extra millisecs of time that the difference in add cuts between the two video files creates? Will this save to a file that will be ultimately remuxable back to the other video stream?

I don't suppose anyone has some other ideas about how to go about this?

Say, for instance, on these two files;

The video from the first one is clearly the better video stream, but when i try to mux the audio from the second to the first, after each add break cut you can see (hear) that the audio video sync gets slightly out each time. AND if your audio/vid streams are not the same length it will give an error and cut the frames off the video.

Thus, again, can the ac3 be edited with audacity and be successfully remuxed together with the better video stream?
Does anyone else bother trying things like this? With success?

You may have to treat each video segments (segment between cuts) as a separate video
and add the new audio to each separate segment.

Make sure both videos (old and new audio source) are cut as close as possible to be identical.

Then "join" all the segments back together.

Personally I'd always choose HD over SD unless the original show is only SD anyway. For audio I'd prefer 5.1 to 2.0, but really for a movie like A Beautiful Mind you probably wont even be able to tell the difference. Although if you really want to get fancy you could extract the audio from the second one and the video from the first and then combine them using the ES muxer. Although syncing them up could be difficult if there are commercials as even a slight variation in the segment lengths could throw that off.
