"There was an error contacting the server" Msg at launch.

Dear Dan203, probably there is a point to make not the page only but implement an autoactivation service which could be accessed with manually pointing .com domain via hosts file to the ip where .net domain points to.

I have also been loving it since V3. According to the ICANN lookup, the domain expires next month. No pressure. Best wishes to DanR if you get to communicate with him.

The domains are out of my hands. Hopefully they wont expire, but if they do I will attempt to purchase them myself.

For Pro there is no manual activation process, so unfortunately there is nothing I can do about that. It's hard coded to use videoredo.com

I looked into it and apparently Pro uses a different server for activation, so that should actually work.
I was about to post there was something in the Pro Application Notes about Manual Activation, but the Wayback Machine never crawled the link

If on-line activation cannot be completed, for example, the system isn't connected to the internet, please see "manual activation".

Since the built in help is outdated, is there any way to bring the Application notes over to videoredo.net?

I finally got access to the server but it turns out it was hacked and the server host had shut it down. Because it had been down so long the only available backup was from after the hack, so I can't just restore what we lost. For now I've thrown up a basic landing page so at least something is there.

I will try to restore the activation and update scripts tomorrow so that those will no longer error out.

However I don't have a full backup of the site on my machine, so the actual e-commerce portion could be down until DanR returns.

Hello Dan,
thank you very much for all your efforts. I would like to give you my best wishes for you and of course also for DanR; I hope he gets better soon.
For all VRD users, I hope there will be a way to continue the project as it is one of the best editing software I have seen. Of course, the unbelievably good support made a particular contribution to this. I have never seen such communication with users and such attention to individual difficulties with using the program. The program has gotten better and better over the years and it would be a real loss if it came to an end. I hope that DanR will find a way (preferably together with you) after a full recovery to continue the project and resume business (perhaps as a subscription model to bring some more money into the till?).
If the end cannot be averted, for whatever reason, a final version (based on the last beta) that can be activated locally with the license without an external server would certainly be the optimal solution. Then the program could certainly continue to run for a long time.

Warm greetings and best wishes
Frank

Right now, new PC installations can't activate the software.
What happens to us that already installed and activated it? Do we know if the license protection that is been used by VideoRedo, needs to phone-home every now and then so it will not invalidate the license?
Crap!! Of course if I had activated mine a few days earlier I would have been fine.

Hi Dan, I noticed that "Pro" manual activation refers to videoredopro.com, which seems to have the same issue as videoredo.com. I don't know if pro can use the same activation setup/URL that's on .net currently, or not.

I think it depends on exactly what the reason is, if VRD survives or not (i.e. Dan R is the owner and nobody else was given authority to run the business/pay the bills, or business slowed down). Like you, I hope that the business can keep going, as I've been using this since prior to TV Suite. Shortly after the initial release of VRD, I remember reading someone mentioning the program, so I tried it and I loved it. If I remember correctly, someone from VRD came in and asked what features that people wanted to see, which one of the bigger ones requested, was commercial detection. This feature was added a short time later, and along with the support, has made this become one of my l most common, longest used software in a while.

I'm wondering if it would make sense to possibly look into adding or converting over to a subscription model. I've seen the following in the past year or so

1) Perpetual license were sold for version 9 and prior. Starting with version 10, only a subscription was available, but version 9 was still supported (just minor updates added)
2) Potential customers has up to a certain date to purchase a perpetual license, before it was converted to strictly a subscription model

If a subscription model was to be entertained, which of these scenarios (or another) would make sense to go with? Which amount would be attractive enough for new customers? What amount and what additional features would switch an existing customer to switch over to a subscription?

I don't know if there was a version 7 planned and if there was a list of features planned for it, but if there was a list and depending on what was added, and the cost, I would switch over to a subscription.
I know one feature I would like to see is being able to see cut points from the commercial detection better without having to zoom in (thus creating the horizontal scroll bar) or pressing F5/F6 before the start a set. Something like if there are two cuts within seconds of each other have it show a different color than default red. There might be something already liked this setup, but I haven't been able to find it.

I'm really sorry to hear that Dan R is very ill and too pray for a speedy and complete recovery. He has been a truly caring and helpful guy over the many years that VideoReDo has been up and running. Always willing to help and interested in what the end user's wishes are.
Every blessing, David

Hmm, it worked for me once. Got it in a W8 VM.

The second time attempt was for a W10 VM.
Made the mistake of doing the upgrade process on my desktop (outside the VM)
Got a token but the VM VRD6 would not take it. (invalid?).

Trying to do it inside the VM and am told that the upgrade has already been done.
So no new tolken inside the VM...

Thoughts welcome.

Thanks for the try, Dan, and glad to hear it's working for others, though it didn't work for me. I'm posting this so others in my shoes will realize they're not alone.

I've been trying to re-activate vrd 6 on a brand new PC, which replaced a 12-year-old (!) system last month. I can get an activation key from either the old vrd.com site or your new vrd.net activation page(thanks again), but when I enter it into the program I get an "invalid activation key" message.

Maybe my system ID is bonkers because of the new PC? Or maybe the problem is that this was an upgrade from version 5, which in turn was an upgrade from 4? Or maybe it's a Windows 11 problem? Who knows. I hope the whole operation can get back up and running so this problem can be solved and I can use my favorite editor again.

Most of all, though, I hope Dan R will come through his current ordeal and get back on his feet soon. Best wishes to him.

Whoa! It worked! and am I embarrassed! I didn't realize that VRD changes your user token and system ID when you restart the program. I saved those entries in a text file for easy cut-and-paste, never noticing that what was displayed in the manual validation screen was different from what I was using to obtain the key online. No wonder that when I entered the key based on the old data, the program, which had already moved on to new data, said "Huh? Invalid validation key, dummy!"

I don't know what prompted me to try again and this time compare what was on the validation screen to what was in my text file. But I did, and now everything's up and running. Take a tip from me -- pay attention to what's on the screen. And again, many thanks to Dan for posting this solution.

TVSuite V6 had been running fine for me until today. When I try to open any video file I get the "Problem with registration key." error.
Have same issue with version 5.

Same "Problem with registration key" issue here. Thanks, Dan for the help. BTW, I own a small software company (biotech) and I am the sole engineer. I know what a pain it is when everything goes sideways and your customers start losing it. You have my sympathy, and thanks for continuing to plug away.

Bonus questions for anyone else on the forum: On the manual activation page (https://videoredo.net/activation/) I'm asked for my USER TOKEN (Format: XXXXXXXXXX-XXXXXX-XXXXXX) and a System ID (Format: XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX)

I have an UPGRADE token from when I upgraded from TVS Suite v5 to v6 that is the same format as the USER token. Are they the same thing.

I have no idea what my System ID is or where to find it. Anyone?

I just want to be prepared as well as possible for servers to go away so I can continue using the program in that event. I use it almost weekly and it would be hard to live without. Is there a way to stop the application from phoning home to a server once registration has been confirmed. This would allow the application for continue working even if servers go away, which seems a real possibility now.

Best of luck sorting this out. I had a feeling things had gone awry when the update server started choking a week or so ago, then when I got repeated "Problem with registration key" messages this evening I found your tweet about Dan R's situation followed by the hacked site. It never rains...

Hopefully something of VideoRedo can be salvaged. I've been a user of the original program, and later TVSuite, since 2007. There's nothing in the same league for speed and simplicity of use.

My best to Dan R and his family for a full recovery.
