Tivo Metadata

Does TiVo (HDTIVO) recognized any non encrypted header format?

Example: I have vacation video that I would like to break up into smaller segments of 2-5 minutes, then add a meta-data description header so that when I upload to the TiVo they appear in a single folder such as "Alaska Vacation" and then individual videos displays a TiVo description when the "info" button is used in the TiVo remote.

I realize that VRD does not currently do this, so I am looking for ideas\suggestions.

Consider using pyTivo to transfer files to your TiVo. Metadata is handled by a text file in the same folder as video.mpg, which must be named video.mpg.txt. See the pyTivo wiki:

http://pytivo.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php/Metadata

The wiki has a link to the pyTiVo forum where you could post further questions if you go that route. There is also a pyTiVo thread on TivoCommunityForum.

In your case you would have to manually compose the metadata files, but that could be a pretty simple process. The wiki link given above shows an example metadata file.

pyTivo is a solid free program with a great reputation and good support by the current dominant developer, W. McBrine.

Thanks. A couple of years ago I installed pyTivo and played around with it a bit. At some point it stopped working and I reverted back to using the TiVo Desktop. I'll try again and see if pyTivo can do what I need it to do. Overall I just wish there was some kind of Meta-data standard that TiVo, youtube, other DVRs, etc would accept so people can create their own meta-data for home videos and other non professional stuff.

.mp4 files can, and usually do, contain metadata. That doesn't help you much if you don't want to transcode your original files (MPEG-2 ?) to MPEG-4 or H.264 in the .mp4 container. There is a free program, AtomicParsley, for inserting metadata into .mp4 files. I believe .mp4 videos streamed to TiVo's by StreamBaby will use this metadata in the TiVo display.

Check out this blog link for detailed instructions for installing pyTiVo.
