Unable to initialize the video display

Hi!

I have searched the forums and found loads and loads of people having this problem. But I couldn't see anyone reverting with a reliable solution?? There even was a post saying that a problem had been found in the software and that there would be a fix. That was 6 years ago... Really no solution still?

To recap, while letting VAP do AdScans silently in the background, if you have Media Center opened, maximised, and you're watching something, VideoRedo stops with a window saying "Unable to initialize the video display".

It shouldn't need to bother with the video display at all while working in silent mode. I have tried every Video Driver. Nothing helps.

It is horribly annoying.

Hmmm, just had a thought. Could this be related to the stealing focus issue? When you have MCE maximised, it does not allow anything to grab focus. Is that perhaps what it's trying to do, and fails with??

No that's not it, If I leave it maximized playing music, it doesn't happen. Only if watching video.

But it goes away if I disable the video driver. I guess I'll just have to remember to keep enabling it whenever I want to use VideoRedo interactively... :-(

Check if there is more info in the log file.

Try a different video driver in Tools>Options>Playback Devices

OK I was just looking through the code and there appear to be an option for this. Go into VideoReDo, hold Shift and click Tools->Options. This will bring up a hidden list of options. Now find one called "Do not display video in silent batch", set it to true and hit OK.

Based on what I see in the code it should automatically set the video driver to disabled if VRD is running in silent mode. So it should alleviate your problem.

Hi!

There is nothing standing out in the log, and as I already said in my original post, I have tried ALL the drivers. Same thing with all of them.

That sounds excellent! Trying it now. Thank you.

Hi!

The hidden option works beautifully. It should be brought out from hiding :)

Thank you again.

I didn't even know it was there until I went looking. I'm going to have to ask DanR why it's not enabled by default.

A VAP user has found that setting this eliminates some failure-to-open problems he was experiencing, see **this**.

Unless you determine this will be enabled by default in future versions, could you tell me where this is in the Windows registry? I will look at having VAP set it directly at startup.

It's under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\DRD Systems\VideoReDo-TVSuite4\Special and the option is called QuietUsesSilentVideo

None that we are aware of. In fact we were just talking about making that option the default.

Hi!

Make sure it stays that way during upgrades as well, not only fresh installations (mine was reset back to False during an upgrade)

Hi!

In 635e, the default is STILL False. What's the problem with changing it? I have had no problems in setting it to True, and have problems as long as it is set to False.

dflannery, Please don't update our settings in the registry as that will mess up the use of the VRD_REGISTRY.ini.

I don't know why this isn't the default. Even more I can't think of any reason that the option should even exist. I think we should just remove it and never show the video when running silent mode.

Yes please. That's the only thing that makes sense. Simply keep 'silent' silent.

Hi, I have a fresh install of VRD to 634, same version as on previous PC (old pc died, now rebuilt to an i7-3820/16Gb, hoping performance improves over the old q9450. Both win7).

It's under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\DRD Systems\VideoReDo-TVSuite4\Special and the option is called QuietUsesSilentVideo
1. I just got the Unable to Initialize error today with VMR9 and a .bat file... switching to VMR7 to see if that fixes it. Other suggestions welcome.
The .bat file with parameters, in part -
Code:
cscript //nologo "%PTH%VideoReDoTVSuite4\vp.vbs" "%F1%" "%F2%" /p:zzz-MPEG2ps /na
CScript //Nologo "%PTH%VideoReDoTVSuite4\AdScan.vbs" "%F2%" "%F3%"
2. How to I change the .bat above to use this "quiet" and/or "silent mode" and should I just change that key in the registry at every VRD install, or is there another way ... ?

3. Also, the same .bat never used to throw any pop-ups but now it does (see attached jpg) but only every now and again ! How can I switch that new "feature" off, since the .bat file runs over all files in a folder and I do not want to be clicking OK "every now and again" ?

I should add, I'm not too fussed about quiet/silent as I like to see the progress bar (but not with the full window on adscan like I get now) but I really would like to get rid of 1 and 3 above. :)

Good software, by the way !

Thanks.

If you're using the 635 beta, I suggest switching to the EVR driver on the Tools>Options>Playback page. This driver seems to resolve the VMR / batch issue. If you're not using the beta, you can revert back to DirectX, but that will disable Aero.

OK. 634. EVR (whatever that is).
I checked the scripts and "/q" on the end works, however the adscan goes very slow... much slower now on the i7-3820 than on the old q9450 I had ... I may as well try 635, it is surprising as I'd thought this new box would fly with this stuff but it doesn't.
