Wow, OLED TVs are DUMB not smart! (re title from Elementary Streams)

That was nice, VRD did not use to even always detect DTS-HD files. Had to jump through hoops to get things done.
Now It's wonderful. DTS-HD 5.1ch & 2ch and the 2ch AC3 commentaries. Flawless!

One question, are separate 2ch and 5.1ch tracks needed anymore?
Or do most players step the tracks down to 2ch as needed? The video file was from 2000.


Did find that my LG-OLED tv will not see DTS or AC3 files at all.
And it auto plays the commentary audio track when I play the movie (M2TS).
So looks like I'll have to strip everything out but the 5.1 audio. Not sure even that will work.

Not as happy with my new tv...not handling .idx/.sub subtitles and no AC3, DTS-HD files, has got to be on purpose!
Probably no multitrack audio anything.

I don't know if that's required any more or not. I know that one of the big reasons people use to to do a 2.0 and 5.1 track was so that the same file would play on both an iOS device (iPhone/iPad) and an AppleTV with surround sound. But a few years ago Apple added 5.1 audio support to iOS so that's no longer required.

Sadly VRD will not mux a DTS audio file. (DTS not an option).
Hate to have to drop it down to AC3.
Don't think I have anything that will work with DTS audio files, TMPGEnc will not touch DTS either.

OK, so can't select to remove but can "select to keep"...

If set to single track audio VRD will keep the "Primary" audio track.
(with 606296 PTS underflows, Max PTS 4912713) seems to sound OK.



So select the 5.1 DTS audio track and save the file off (single track audio setting) and I have my 5.1 DTS movie!
Wow, of course my OLED TV tells me that the M2TS file does NOT support audio!...That's a NEW surprise.

Think I going to have to accept that my new OLED TV will not play DTS audio!

EDIT...VRD was able to keep the 5.1 DTS and convert it to AC3 on save. <<< VRD so improved here!!!
---------The LG OLED TV does not like 28 GB files. Would reset to free up memory.
---------Finally got it to play but don't jump ahead, speed up or anything but cross your fingers.

Looks like if I want to watch OLED,1080p & DTS I'm going to have to use the TV as my pc monitor.
These TVs are far from "SMART".

OLED monitors are down to 43 inches...I want a 32 inch...not holding breath.

Just a warning before you plurge for a high end TV.

We do kind of support DTS. It should work from a DVD, TS or MKV. However there is an oddity in the way DTS-HD is stored in TS that makes it incompatible. It will only pick up the core 5.1 portion of the stream and will lose the HD part. For output we only support MKV and PS.

One other issue..."Clipping"? Only 89 clipped. I doubled the volume.

Not sure what this is. I'm more use to reports like 10,000 frames removed. Don't remember "clipping".



Did have to take the 6ch DTS down to 6ch AC3. DTS is just too incompatible.

Also VRD did a 32k sample rate on "auto". Re did it and forced 48k sample and audio playback had a LOT! less issues.

Clipping should only occur when you change the volume or use some sort of normalization. Basically it's when the adjusted loudness value of the sample exceeds the min/max value allowed by the output format. In that case the value is set to whatever the min/max value is and the sample is marked as "clipped". 89 samples in a 48k file is less than 1ms of audio, there is no way you'd even notice it.

Now if you weren't adjusting the volume or using normalization, then I'm not sure where that would come from.

This is probably not new to you, but I have found trying use a TV for any kind of sound is somewhat pointless. But it does depend on what else you have to play through. I use an AV receiver, all sources go through that. For saved files, I play via an Nvidia Shield TV device. It handles up to Dolby Atmos and DTS equivalents easily. It will even play AAC 5.1 files from UK Terrestrial TV, although I now habitually add an AC-3 track when editing in VRD. I have also tried FLAC, and that works too.

No. Compliant 5.1 streams carry downmix metadata which does this for you, and does it better than we could do with a manual mix.

Good to know, I used to use a WDTV player. Had hoped I could get away from that with a new "smart" LG-OLED tv.
So TVs are still not there yet.

The one good thing with my 4k 48 inch CX is that somehow it makes my x264.mp4 shows look
better then on my 4k 2014 Samsung 28 inch monitor...A lot more then just the OLED color.
The CX update files are more then one GB so it must be doing a lot of something!

Many software players will show two audio streams, 5.1 and Stereo, when in fact there is only one, 5.1 with the downmix flag.
