Thread: difference in MPG output from two TiVo transport stream files

Default difference in MPG output from two TiVo transport stream files

I'm not quite sure where to put this question.

Recently, I recorded the full first season of "The Missing" from STARZ. When I transferred them from the TiVo and cut off the promos at the beginning and ends, each episode was about 2.7 GB ( 0.5 GB). STARZ recently began airing season 2. The first two episodes are over 5 GB. I used MediaInfo to compare a season 1 file and a season 2 file; the differences are highlighted in yellow:

    Name: Capture.jpg
Views: 165
Size: 147.3 KB

I guess I'm confused why one is bigger. Is it simply that the S2 episodes that STARZ is airing are "bigger" than the ones from S1?

There are some settings from the S1 file that are missing from the S2 file. Are these things that should be affected by VideoReDo, that would make the file smaller? Because I made no changes to the settings in the software.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts anyone has.

Well, S1 is dvd level bit rate, closer to Standard definition, around 7Mb per second and
S2 is about 70% greater at 12Mb per second(around 1.5MB per second). Dvd limit is 10Mb. More like HD level.

You could compress these down with H.264 to 1.5 or 2 Mbps and they would be a
fraction of the size and look fine.(to me)

My only size concern is that they're small enough to be copied onto a flash drive formatted as FAT32, which means they can't be bigger than about 4.2 GB.

It just seemed odd to me that two episodes of the same show on the same channel would be so different, and I was wondering if it was a VideoReDo thing, a TiVo thing, or a STARZ thing.
